Key practices for ethical research during scientific expeditions

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
In many cases, expeditionary practices undermined local knowledge and expertise. This perspective advocates for a shift from parachute science towards a collaborative research approach. We reflect on and suggest best practices during scientific expeditions within research teams and in the team's interactions with different communities.

Empirical prediction of organic matter digestibility in grasses, legumes and their mixtures from dairy farms in Atlantic Spain

open access: yesGrassland Science, EarlyView.
Abstract This study characterized the chemical composition and organic matter digestibility (OMD) of herbage from commercial dairy farms in Galicia (NW Spain), a humid‐temperate Atlantic region, and developed empirical prediction equations for OMD based on routine wet‐chemistry traits.

Comparing species accumulation within taxonomically well‐ and poorly resolved insect groups over 37 years

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Here, we used a unique 37‐year (1969–2006) freshwater macroinvertebrate time‐series, collected over seven sites in central Germany, to study biodiversity patterns and species accumulation over time. Accumulation curves of Diptera diversity have not reached a plateau in 37 years of sampling.

Cryptic diversity and recent diversification in the Pyrrhulina australis species complex (Characiformes, Lebiasinidae) revealed by mitochondrial DNA

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Pyrrhulina australis Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903, is widely distributed across the main hydrographic basins of South America. The taxonomic integrity of this species is nevertheless challenged by the lack of clear diagnostic characters, its marked geographic variation and the morphological overlap with its congeners. In this context, the present

Embryonic and larval development of the endangered Chiapas killifish Tlaloc hildebrandi (Cyprinodontiformes: Profundulidae)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The early ontogeny of endemic freshwater fishes provides essential baseline biological information for conservation and management, particularly in species with restricted distributions and high vulnerability to habitat degradation, environmental change and population decline. This study presents the first detailed description of embryonic and

Cryptobenthic reef fishes may not be safe from invasive lionfish (Pterois spp. Oken, 1817)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Lionfish (Pterois spp.) are hypothesized to negatively influence cryptobenthic reef fish assemblages through predation. We evaluated these potential effects on Caribbean reefs in Costa Rica and tropical reefs in Brazil. Brazil provided a reference condition for cryptobenthic assemblages prior to lionfish invasion, while the Costa Rica sites ...

Photoprotective potential of gadusol against ultraviolet B radiation in melanocytes

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
Gadusol protects melanocytes from ultraviolet B (UVB)‐induced damage without cytotoxicity. Abstract The increasing incidence of skin cancer, including melanoma, combined with the need for ultraviolet (UV) filters that are safe for human health and marine ecosystems, is driving the search for new photoprotective agents.
