A theory of investment based on convex adjustment costs first appeared in a paper by \textit{R. Lucas} [J. Polit. Econ. 75, 321-334 (1967)]. A new formulation of such a theory is now becoming increasingly popular. An attractive feature of this reformulation is the explicit connection made with Tobin's ''q'' theory of investment.
