Formation Mechanisms of the Molecular Ion Polar Plume and Its Contribution to Ion Escape From Mars

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2022
We investigated the formation mechanism of a molecular ion plume and its contribution to ion escape based on Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) observations from November 2014 to October 2019 and numerical models.

Multispecies MHD Study of Ion Escape at Ancient Mars: Effects of an Intrinsic Magnetic Field and Solar XUV Radiation

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2022
Ion escape is one of the key processes responsible for drastic climate change on ancient Mars. Ion escape is affected by the solar X‐ray and EUV (X‐ray and extreme ultraviolet (XUV)) flux, the solar wind, and the presence of a planetary intrinsic ...

Global Mars‐solar wind coupling and ion escape

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2017
AbstractLoss of the early Martian atmosphere is often thought to have occurred due to an effective transfer of the solar wind energy through the Martian induced magnetic barrier to the ionosphere. We have quantified the coupling efficiency by comparing the power of the heavy ion outflow with the available power supplied by the upstream solar wind ...

Estimations of Ion Escape from Mars

2022
<p>We estimate ion escape from Mars by combining observations and models. Assuming that upstream solar wind conditions are known, a computer model of the interaction between the solar wind and the planet is executed for different ionospheric ion production rates. This results in different amounts of mass loading of the solar wind. Then we

Cold ion escape from the Martian ionosphere

Planetary and Space Science, 2014
We here report on new measurements of the escape flux of oxygen ions from Mars by combining the observations of the ASPERA-3 and MARSIS experiments on board the European Mars Express spacecraft.

Ion-induced gamma-ray detection of fast ions escaping from fusion plasmas

Review of Scientific Instruments, 2014
A 12 × 12 pixel detector has been developed and used in a laboratory experiment for lost fast-ion diagnostics. With gamma rays in the MeV range originating from nuclear reactions 9Be(α, nγ)12C, 9Be(d, nγ)12C, and 12C(d, pγ)13C, a high purity germanium (HPGe) detector measured a fine-energy-resolved spectrum of gamma rays.
