Transport in Ion Exchange Membranes
1986A polymeric matrix to which ionizable groups are covalently bound swells and imbibes water when immersed in an aqueous solution. Dissociation of the ionizable groups leaves charges bound to the matrix and counterions free in the absorbed water. When prepared in membrane form such polymeric matrixes are called ion exchange membranes.
