In-situ TEM Study of Dislocation Loop Evolution in Tungsten under Dual-ion Beam Irradiation

open access: yesYuanzineng kexue jishu
Fusion reactors are regarded as the ultimate source of energy for addressing future power problems. However, prior to the building of fusion power plants, a number of scientific obstacles including significant degradation of plasma-facing material (PFM).

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Ion-Beam Mixing in Layered Systems

open access: yesУспехи физики металлов, 2010
Thickness of silicide phases at Mo-on-Si and Si-on-Мо interfaces increases identically and linearly with a dose of irradiation at the small doses (by He+ ions to Φ≤5⋅1020 ion/m2 and Ar+ ions to Φ≤1.3⋅1018 ion/m2).

Affecting the Properties of Copper–Graphene Electroconductive Composite by Severe Plastic Deformation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Copper‐based composites enhanced with carbon feature convenient mechanical properties and favorable electric conductivity. Processing via deformation and thermomechanical treatments can introduce advantageous microstructures further enhancing their performance. Herein, copper–graphene powder‐based composites are directly consolidated via rotary swaging

Enhanced Sputtering Yields from Single-Ion Impacts on Gold Nanorods [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Sputtering yields, enhanced by more than an order of magnitude, have been observed for 80 keV Xe ion irradiation of monocrystalline Au nanorods. Yields are in the range 100–1900  atoms/ion compared with values for a flat surface of ≈50.

Surface nanostructuring of titanium alloy dental screws by 10 keV Ar+ irradiation

open access: yesResults in Surfaces and Interfaces
The influence of 10 keV Ar+ ion irradiation on the surface topography of Ti–6Al–4V dental screws was investigated. The surface facing the ion beam became uniformly covered with nanoprotrusions, the size of which increased with the ion fluence.

Symbolic Regression and Multi‐Objective Optimization of the Flory–Huggins Interaction Parameter for Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a data‐driven method to derive the mathematical expressions of the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χ for the swelling behavior of temperature–responsive hydrogels. Starting from initial assumptions of χ, our workflow combines Bayesian optimization, Flory–Rehner theory, and symbolic regression to generate candidate χ expressions.

Hydrogen‐Assisted Fracture of Iron‐Based Fe–Ni–Al Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Principal relations and fracture mechanisms of single‐phase and precipitate‐strengthened Fe–Ni–Al alloys subjected to prior electrochemical hydrogen charging are identified. The mechanisms of hydrogen effect on strength and microhardness are discussed, including hydrogen‐induced increase in microhardness and the role of hydrogen in fracture behavior ...
