Numerical simulation of full-aperture-pair ion optics in a miniature ion thruster

open access: yes, 2018
The 211-aperture-pair two-grid ion optics of a miniature ion thruster is numerically simulated. Since the plasma in the miniature ion thruster is too inhomogeneous to introduce mirror or translational boundary conditions between apertures, all the ...

Numerical Analysis of a Miniature Microwave-discharge Ion Thruster Using Water as the Propellant

open access: yes, 2018
We have conducted three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations with Monte Carlo collisions method (PIC/MCC) to investigate the discharge characteristics of water for a microwave-discharge ion thruster, which can replace a high-pressure gas storage ...

Simplified Optimization of the Magnetic Configuration of HEMP-Thrusters

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
One type of ion thruster that has gained attention in recent years is the High Efficiency Multistage Plasma (HEMP) thruster. Optimizing the performance of these thrusters can be challenging due to the complexity of the underlying physics.

Exploring lipid diversity and minimalism to define membrane requirements for synthetic cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Designing the lipid membrane of synthetic cells is a complex task, in which its various roles (among them solute transport, membrane protein support, and self‐replication) should all be integrated. In this review, we report the latest top‐down and bottom‐up advances and discuss compatibility and complexity issues of current engineering approaches ...

An integrated fluid simulation platform on Hall thruster plasmas

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2022
In this work, a newly integrated fluid simulation platform, named DUT-HTFS, is developed for the multiple physical fields in Hall thrusters. The integrated simulation platform includes three inter-related parts: the geometry module, background magnetic ...

Unrolling of Syngonium podophyllum: Functional Anatomy, Morphology and Modelling of Its Peltate Leaves

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
The unrolling of the peltate leaves in Syngonium podophyllum is analyzed and quantified (left‐hand side to center). These measurements serve to verify a mathematical model for leaf unrolling based on the model used in Schmidt (2007). An additional formula for obtaining a layer mismatch from a prescribed radius is derived.

Molecular propellants for ion thrusters

open access: yesPlasma Sources Science and Technology, 2019
Abstract There is no ideal atomic propellant for ion thrusters. Xenon commonly used as propellant becomes resource-critical in light of electric propulsion commercialization. Combining these considerations leads to seeking alternatives to xenon as propellant.

Sputtering Holes with Ion Beamlets [PDF]

open access: yes, 1974
Ion beamlets of predetermined configurations are formed by shaped apertures in the screen grid of an ion thruster having a double grid accelerator system. A plate is placed downstream from the screen grid holes and attached to the accelerator grid.

3D Simulations of Ion Thruster Accelerator Grid Erosion Accounting for Charge Exchange Ion Space Charge

open access: yes2018 Joint Propulsion Conference, 2018
Accelerator (accel) grid sputtering by ions formed through charge-exchange (CEX) reactions between beam ions and residual neutral gas is a critical life-limiting mechanism for gridded ion thrusters. The three-dimensional ion optics code CEX3D is designed
