Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Inherent properties of binary tetrahedral semiconductors

open access: yes, 2010
A new approach utilising the concept of ionic charge theory has been used to explain the inherent properties such as lattice thermal conductivity and bulk modulus of 3,5 and 2,6 semiconductors.

Structure and ionic conductivity in lithium garnets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Garnets are capable of accommodating an excess of lithium cations beyond that normally found in this prototypical structure. This excess lithium is found in a mixture of coordination environments with considerable positional and occupational disorder and

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Ionic Capillary Evaporation in Weakly Charged Nanopores

open access: yes, 2010
Using a variational field theory, we show that an electrolyte confined to a neutral cylindrical nanopore traversing a low dielectric membrane exhibits a first-order ionic liquid-vapor pseudo-phase-transition from an ionic-penetration "liquid" phase to an

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Impact of intrinsic localized modes of atomic motion on materials properties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Recent neutron and x-ray scattering measurements show intrinsic localized modes (ILMs) in metallic uranium and ionic sodium iodide. Here, the role ILMs play in the behavior of these materials is examined.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Software for Evaluating Ionic Conductivity of Inorganic–Polymer Composite Solid Electrolytes

open access: yesEnergy Material Advances, 2023
Inorganic–polymer composite solid electrolytes (IPCSEs) obtained by filling the polymer matrix with inorganic materials usually have higher ionic conductivity compared with individual phases.
