Application of the oblique ionogram as vertical ionogram

Science China Technological Sciences, 2012
The vertical ionogram can provide the important ionospheric parameters, such as critical frequency, virtual height and electron density, for ionospheric research. The oblique ionosonde has the ability to detect the ionosphere over sea and other terrain where it is not practical to deploy vertical sounder and provide more ionograms with less ...

Digital ionogram data

Advances in Space Research, 1990
Abstract This report summarizes the availability of digital ionogram data from the USSR and the French ionosonde stations, and from the Digisonde 256 network. Both manually generated and automatically generated data are discussed.

Backscatter ionogram inversion

2003 Proceedings of the International Conference on Radar (IEEE Cat. No.03EX695), 2004
A backscatter ionogram, BSI, is a plot showing the group path or time delay against operating frequency when using ground-based swept frequency radar. In the case of ground backscatter, the received signals are reflected from distant locations on the Earth's surface.

Automatic interpretation of oblique ionograms

Advances in Space Research, 2015
Abstract We present an algorithm for the identification of trace characteristics of oblique ionograms allowing determination of the Maximum Usable Frequency (MUF) for communication between the transmitter and receiver. The algorithm automatically detects and rejects poor quality ionograms.

Automatic calculation of electron density profiles from digital ionograms: 3. Processing of bottomside ionograms

Radio Science, 1983
Automatic scaling of bottomside Digisonde ionograms gives the E and F region echo traces with high accuracy. Polarization and incidence angle information in the ionogram enables the extraction of the vertical, ordinary polarization echo trace from quiet as well as disturbed ionograms.

Automatic scaling of polar ionograms

Antarctic Science, 2011
AbstractThe Istituto Nazionale di Geosifica e Vulcanologia (INGV) software for automatic scaling of ionograms (Autoscala) was improved by introducing a system to identify D region absorption events, spread-F condition (frequency spreading in the F region), and Z-ray propagation.

Loop structuring of ionogram traces

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1973
Abstract The phenomenon of small scale loop structuring of F-region ionogram traces is investigated; this loop structuring is shown to be caused by high-frequency ray propagation through irregularities in which dN/dz is less than ambient but greater than zero.
