Simulation of ionosonde observations of ionospheric holes
Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1992Abstract When conducting active experiments in the ionosphere which give rise to artificial disturbances of electron density, it is necessary to diagnose such disturbances. The study of irregularities using groundbased radio sounding methods often involves recording and analyzing ionogram traces, depending on the position, dynamics and phase of ...

Using the Swedish Ionosonde Network
Sixth International Conference on `HF Radio Systems and Techniques', 1994The three vertical ionosondes operated by the Swedish Institute of Space Physics have been modernized and integrated with a data network. They are collectively called SIN, the Swedish Ionosonde Network. The authors describe a graphical user interface for running and displaying results from the ionosondes.

The Progress of the South African Ionosonde Network
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2008South Africa has been involved in ionospheric data collection and research for over 30 years. An ionospheric field station has been operating in Grahamstown (Eastern Cape, 33.3°S, 26.5°E) since 1973. Until 1996, a Chirp sounder was operational at this station, after which a Lowell DPS-4 Digisonde was installed. In 2000 two further ionosondes were added

A reliable ionosonde for continuous automatic operation
Radio Science, 1975Combining time‐tested techniques with modern electronic components, an inexpensive ionosonde producing high quality records and capable of unattended automatic operation for extended periods has been designed. Four instruments were built at a cost in 1967, exclusive of labor, of $2000 apiece.

Quantifying spread F by digital ionosondes
Advances in Space Research, 2003The width of frequency-spreading (Δff) on ionograms was shown (Wright, et al., 1977, by comparison with OGO-6 Satellite observations) to be proportional to ΔNN near and above the F-region peak. Thus, even classical analog ionograms using logarithmic frequency scales were direct reading for this important parameter, although little use has been made of ...

A Low-Power Vertical-Incidence Ionosonde
IEEE Transactions on Geoscience Electronics, 1971Vertical-incidence (VI) ionospheric measurements, traditionally performed with 5- to 50-kW ionosondes, may be obtained alternatively using FM CW transmissions of much lower peak power. The FM signal must be interrupted periodically to permit both transmitting and receiving with a single antenna.

Use of the phase ionosonde for the study of ionospheric properties.
The Phase Ionosonde is capable of giving more precise experimental data than the conventional sounder. This accuracy, which is an order of magnitude better than that of the conventional ionosonde, makes it necessary to seek improvement in the technique of true-height reduction.openaire +2 more sources
