An ionospheric convection signature of antiparallel reconnection [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2001
This paper sets out a critical test of the antiparallel merging hypothesis. For the conflicting theories of antiparallel and subsolar reconnection, we model the location of reconnection regions on the dayside magnetopause, their ionospheric footprints, and the resulting ionospheric convection patterns.

The Lompe code: A Python toolbox for ionospheric data analysis

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2022
A recent paper by Laundal et al. (2022c) presented a new technique to combine all available measurements of polar ionospheric electrodynamics; magnetic field measurements from ground and space, ionospheric convection data from radars and satellites, and ...

Limb sounders tracking topographic gravity wave activity from the stratosphere to the ionosphere around midlatitude Andes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Several studies have shown that the surroundings of the highest Andes mountains at midlatitudes in the Southern Hemisphere exhibit gravity waves (GWs) generated by diverse sources which may traverse the troposphere and then penetrate the upper layers if ...

Revision of empirical electric field modeling in the inner magnetosphere using Cluster data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Using Cluster data from the Electron Drift (EDI) and the Electric Field and Wave (EFW) instruments, we revise our empirically-based, inner-magnetospheric electric field (UNH-IMEF) model at 22.662 mV/m; K-p\u3c1, 1K(p)\u3c2, 2K(p)\u3c3, 3K(p)\u3c4, 4K(p ...

Simultaneous observations of traveling convection vortices: Ionosphere‐thermosphere coupling [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2017
AbstractWe present simultaneous observations of magnetosphere‐ionosphere‐thermosphere coupling over Svalbard during a traveling convection vortex (TCV) event. Various spaceborne and ground‐based instruments made coordinated measurements, including magnetometers, particle detectors, an all‐sky camera, European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) Svalbard Radar,

Predicting Equatorial Ionospheric Convective Instability Using Machine Learning

open access: yesSpace Weather, 2023
AbstractThe numerical forecast methods used to predict ionospheric convective plasma instabilities associated with Equatorial Spread‐F (ESF) have limited accuracy and are often computationally expensive. We test whether it is possible to bypass first‐principle numeric simulations and forecast irregularities using machine learning models.

Auroral vortex street formed by the magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling instability [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2015
By performing three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations including Alfvén eigenmode perturbations most unstable to the ionospheric feedback effects, we examined the auroral vortex street that often appears just before substorm onset.

Formation of the oxygen torus in the inner magnetosphere: Van Allen Probes observations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We study the formation process of an oxygen torus during the 12–15 November 2012 magnetic storm, using the magnetic field and plasma wave data obtained by Van Allen Probes.

Multispacecraft observations and modeling of the 22/23 June 2015 geomagnetic storm

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
The magnetic storm of 22–23 June 2015 was one of the largest in the current solar cycle. We present in situ observations from the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission (MMS) and the Van Allen Probes (VAP) in the magnetotail, field‐aligned currents from ...

Simultaneous ionospheric and magnetospheric observations of azimuthally propagating transient features during substorms [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 1998
During the 6th August 1995, the CUTLASS Finland HF radar ran in a high time resolution mode, allowing measurements of line-of-sight convection velocities along a single beam with a temporal resolution of 14 s. Data from such scans, during the substorm
