The Numerical Simulation of Hard Rocks for Tunnelling Purposes at Great Depths: A Comparison between the Hybrid FDEM Method and Continuous Techniques

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, Volume 2018, Issue 1, 2018., 2018
Tunnelling processes lead to stress changes surrounding an underground opening resulting in the disturbance and potential damage of the surrounding ground. Especially, when it comes to hard rocks at great depths, the rockmass is more likely to respond in a brittle manner during the excavation.

A New Sulfur and Carbon Degassing Inventory for the Southern Central American Volcanic Arc: The Importance of Accurate Time‐Series Data Sets and Possible Tectonic Processes Responsible for Temporal Variations in Arc‐Scale Volatile Emissions

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 18, Issue 12, Page 4437-4468, December 2017., 2017
Abstract This work presents a new database of SO2 and CO2 fluxes from the Southern Central American Volcanic Arc (SCAVA) for the period 2015–2016. We report ∼300 SO2 flux measurements from 10 volcanoes and gas ratios from 11 volcanoes in Costa Rica and Nicaragua representing the most extensive available assessment of this ∼500 km arc segment.

Turmoil at Turrialba Volcano (Costa Rica): Degassing and eruptive processes inferred from high‐frequency gas monitoring

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 121, Issue 8, Page 5761-5775, August 2016., 2016
Abstract Eruptive activity at Turrialba Volcano (Costa Rica) has escalated significantly since 2014, causing airport and school closures in the capital city of San José. Whether or not new magma is involved in the current unrest seems probable but remains a matter of debate as ash deposits are dominated by hydrothermal material.

How assumed composition affects the interpretation of satellite observations of volcanic ash

open access: yesMeteorological Applications, Volume 21, Issue 1, Page 20-29, January 2014., 2014
ABSTRACT The monitoring of volcanic ash in the atmosphere by satellite‐borne instruments is highly important for generation of warnings of potential ash hazards to aviation, and to constraining model predictions of an ash cloud's anticipated evolution. The high economic cost of flight restrictions creates a demand for precise monitoring and forecasting;

FEM-DEM simulation of Brazilian Tensile Strength (BTS) laboratory tests

open access: yesREM: International Engineering Journal, 2021
A Brazilian Tensile Strength (BTS) laboratory test for meta-andesite was modeled using a Finite/Discrete Element Method (FDEM or FEM-DEM). These hybrid methodologies allow modeling the transition from continuous to discontinuous that happens on ...

Multicompare Tests of the Performance of Different Metaheuristics in EEG Dipole Source Localization

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
We study the use of nonparametric multicompare statistical tests on the performance of simulated annealing (SA), genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and differential evolution (DE), when used for electroencephalographic (EEG) source localization.

FEM-DEM simulation of Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) laboratory tests

open access: yesREM: International Engineering Journal, 2020
Finite/discrete element methods (FDEM) are hybrid numerical models that use algorithms to analyze the transition from continuous to discontinuous. This type of formulation allows modeling physical laboratory tests with greater proximity to reality.

Host Cell Signalling and Leishmania Mechanisms of Evasion

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Medicine, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
Leishmania parasites are able to secure their survival and propagation within their host by altering signalling pathways involved in the ability of macrophages to kill pathogens or to engage adaptive immune system. An important step in this immune evasion process is the activation of host protein tyrosine phosphatase SHP‐1 by Leishmania. SHP‐1 has been
