Guanine and hypoxanthine formation in iridophores of the bullfrog tadpole.

Biochimica et biophysica acta, 1972
Abstract 1. 1. The mechanism of guanine and hypoxanthine formation in iridophores was studied using the ventral skin of bullfrog tadpoles. 2. 2. Incubation mixtures containing skin extract, guanosine or deoxyguanosine and inorganic phosphate yielded guanine, and incubation mixtures containing inosine or adenosine, instead of guanosine or ...

The effects of intermedin on the ultrastructure of amphibian iridophores

General and Comparative Endocrinology, 1969
The ultrastructure and pigment composition of untreated and intermedin-treated integumental iridophores of three species of amphibians, Hyla cinerea, H. arenicolor, and Agalychnis dachnicolor, were examined by electron microscopy and by purine analysis.

Ultrastructural Observations of Motile Iridophores From the Freshwater Goby, Odontobutis obscura

Pigment Cell Research, 1989
The ultrastructure of “motile” iridophores of Odontobutis obscura and the changes in cell shape related to the motility were studied with electron microscopy. Various structural details were revealed by this method, and their importance is discussed. Of particular interest were the abundant microfilaments observed in the cortical cytoplasm.

The Iridophores of the Echinoid Diadema antillarum

Journal of Cell Science, 1961
ABSTRACT The blue pattern seen when the skin of Diadema antillarum is viewed by reflected light is due to iridophores. The quality of their blueness varies with the background provided by neighbouring chromatophores. Microdissection reveals that they consist of gelatinous plates contained in a fibrous and cellular capsule.

Light-sensitive Motile Iridophores and Visual Pigments in the Neon Tetra, Paracheirodon innesi

Zoological Science, 2006
Although motile iridophores in the longitudinal stripes of neon tetra skin are under control of the sympathetic nervous system, they also respond to light directly and show circadian color changes. Using neon tetra skin, we found that the photoresponse of iridophores depends on light intensity, and that light near 500 nm is most effective.

Motile mechanism of blue damselfish (Chrysiptera cyanea) iridophores

Cell Motility, 1987
AbstractIridophores of the blue damselfish, Chrysiptera cyanea, responded to the sympathetic substance, norepinephrine by a shift towards longer wavelengths of the spectral peak of the light reflected by stacks of light‐reflecting platelets (“coloring response”).

Cyclic nucleotide action is mediated through adenosine receptors in damselfish motile iridophores

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Comparative Pharmacology, 1986
Effects of cyclic nucleotides on motile iridophores were examined in the blue damselfish, Chrysiptera cyanea. All of the cyclic nucleotides tested, i.e. cAMP, 2',3'-cAMP and cGMP, accelerated the clearing response of the cells even at concentrations of 10(-5) or 10(-4) M.

Chemical characterization of reflecting platelets in motile iridophores of blue damselfish

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part B: Comparative Biochemistry, 1989
Abstract 1. 1. The chemical nature of the very thin reflecting platelets within the motile iridophores of the blue damselfish, Chrysiptera cyanea , was studied by thin-layer chromatography on crystalline cellulose. 2. 2. The platelets are composed exclusively of guanine, as judged by the limits of sensitivity of this method. 3. 3.

Ultrastructure of the skin melanophores and iridophores in paddlefish, Polyodon spathula

Micron, 2007
The ultrastructure of melanophores and iridophores of Polyodon spathula has been examined by transmission electron microscopy. In the skin, two types of chromatophores, melanophores and iridophores were founded. Melanophores were localized both in epidermis and dermis.
