Antiviral role of grouper STING against iridovirus infection
Fish & Shellfish Immunology, 2015Stimulator of interferon genes (STING, also known as MITA, ERIS, MPYS or TMEM173) has been identified as a central component in the innate immune response to cytosolic DNA and RNA derived from different pathogens. However, the detailed role of STING during fish iridovirus infection still remained largely unknown.

Iridovirus-Like Viruses in Erythrocytes of Lacertids from Portugal
Microscopy and Microanalysis, 2013AbstractIcosahedral nucleo-cytoplasmic large DNA viruses (NCLDV)-like viruses, which form inclusions in the erythrocyte cytoplasm of reptiles, were previously presented as candidates for a new genus of theIridoviridaefamily. The present work describes the distribution of infected lizard hosts and ultrastructural characteristics of the viral inclusions ...

An Iridovirus Isolated from Wild Largemouth Bass
Journal of Aquatic Animal Health, 1996Abstract During July through September 1995, about 1,000 adult largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides died in Santee-Cooper Reservoir, South Carolina. Necropsy of two moribund largemouth bass (each weighing about 2 kg and measuring about 50 cm) revealed no parasites or bacterial infection.

Characterization of iridovirus IV1 polypeptides: mapping by surface labelling
Research in Virology, 1997A comprehensive index of IV1(Tipula iridescent virus, or TIV)-associated polypeptides has been established using enrichments of "empty" and "filled" virions that are considered to be maturation-phase-related. The mapping strategy which involved one- and two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, silver staining, disulphide bond reduction and ...

Antiviral function of Tachyplesin I against iridovirus and nodavirus
Fish & Shellfish Immunology, 2016Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are ubiquitously found in living organisms and are an important component in innate immune response. Tachyplesin I is a potent antimicrobial peptide isolated from the hemocytes of the horseshoe crab, Tachypleus tridentatus.

Antiviral function of grouper MDA5 against iridovirus and nodavirus
Fish & Shellfish Immunology, 2016Melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5) is a critical member of retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I)-like receptor (RLR) family which can recognize viral RNA and enhances antiviral response in host cells. In this study, a MDA5 homolog from orange spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides) (EcMDA5) was cloned, and its roles on grouper virus ...

Covert iridovirus infection of blackfly larvae
Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B: Biological Sciences, 1993Iridovirus infections are typically isolated at extremely low frequencies from invertebrate species in moist or aquatic habitats. Crystalline arrangements of virus particles in heavily infected tissues cause an iridescent hue obvious to the naked eye; diagnosis of iridovirus infection has traditionally occurred when the host appeared bright lilac or ...

An Unusual Replication Strategy of an Animal Iridovirus
1985Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the unusual structure of the Frog virus 3 (FV3) genome and its unique replication strategy. An unusual attribute of FV3 DNA is its high degree of methylation. It is found that over 20% of the deoxycytosine residues—apparently every deoxycytosine in the sequence CpG—has been methylated at the 5 carbon position.

Bohle iridovirus as a vector for heterologous gene expression
Journal of Virological Methods, 2007The large double-stranded DNA (ds DNA) viruses were among the first to be used to construct recombinant viruses, but to date this has not been achieved with any members of the ds DNA virus family, Iridoviridae. We identified a non-essential gene, the viral homologue of eukaryotic initiation factor 2alpha (eIF-2alpha), in Bohle iridovirus (BIV, genus ...
