Massive Southern Ocean phytoplankton bloom fed by iron of possible hydrothermal origin

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Primary productivity in the Southern Ocean plays an important role in the drawdown of atmospheric CO2, but phytoplankton growth is limited by iron. Here the authors show that iron from hydrothermal vents fuels massive phytoplankton blooms in the Southern

Facet‐Dependent Activity of Fe3S4 Crystal in Peroxydisulfate Activation for Organic Pollutants Degradation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Fe3S4 crystal with the exposed [001] facet exhibits higher catalytic activity for activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) to degrade clothianidin (CLO), which can be attributed to the dissolved Fe‐induced homogeneous catalytic process; while Fe3S4 crystal with the exposed [1‐21] facet exhibits excellent catalytic stability and durability, thereby boosting the

Un protocole d’expérimentations de réduction en bas fourneau d’un minerai calcique (la minette de Lorraine)

open access: yesLes Nouvelles de l’Archéologie, 2009
In parallel with laboratory studies on archaeological remains, the knowledge of the conditions of reduction process required the development of experiments based on archaeological data.

The Plant‐to‐Plant Circular Strategy: Coupling Photodegradation and Phytoremediation With Plant‐Based Nanomaterials for Plastic Degradation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Plant‐based nanomaterials derived from alfalfa serve as dual‐function catalysts, coupling photodegradation and phytoremediation to degrade polyethylene under UV‐A light and in soil. The nanomaterials work synergistically with alfalfa and soil microbes, achieving efficient plastic breakdown without trophic transfer.

Identification of an iron–hepcidin complex [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Following its identification as a liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide, the hepcidin peptide was later shown to be a key player in iron homoeostasis. It is now proposed to be the 'iron hormone' which, by interacting with the iron transporter ferroportin,

Performance Estimation and Ex Vivo Validation of Untethered Magnetic Robots in Soft Tissue

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents an empirical model that quantitatively predicts the step‐out frequency of screw‐type untethered magnetic robots (UMRs) in soft viscoelastic environments, including ex vivo brain tissue. By integrating key parameters into a dimensionless framework, the model enables estimation of robot performance across a range of biological ...

Atmospheric Water Harvesting Through Polymer Hydrogel Sorbents: Materials Chemistry, Design Strategies, and Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Polymer‐based hydrogels have emerged as promising materials for atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) due to their high water affinity, tunable network structure, and excellent moisture adsorption‐desorption performance. Functional hydrogel systems enable efficient water capture and controlled release under low‐energy conditions, offering a sustainable ...

Hyper‐Intense Tumor Peripheral Accumulation of Antibody‐Conjugated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles can Enable Breast Cancer Detection by Magnetic Particle Imaging

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tumor‐associated inflammation retains antibody‐targeted or non‐specific antibody conjugated nanoparticles within the tumor microenvironment. Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) enables non‐invasive detection and differentiation of tumors from other organs, owing to higher nanoparticle retention by inflammatory cells in the tumor periphery.

Particle Fluxes in the North-East Atlantic and Southern Ocean [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Concerns regarding the climatic implications of the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrationsthroughout the anthropocene have provided the impetus to obtain a mechanistic understandingof oceanic processes and their role in regulating atmospheric pCO2 ...

Trait–Based Adjustments: Key to Improving Model Representation of the Bloom Seasonal Cycle in the Subantarctic Zone

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Southern Ocean phytoplankton have unique traits that allow them to survive extreme environmental conditions of low iron, light, and temperature. These traits are not well represented in Earth System Models and may lead to misrepresentation of the bloom ...
