Interaction between Molten Al‐Killed Mn–B Steel and Carbon‐Bonded MgO Refractories Based on Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐temperature interactions between low‐sulfur Al‐killed Mn–B steel and MgO–C refractories (0 and 50 wt% recyclates) are studied via finger immersion tests (1600 °C). Surface‐active elements influence infiltration. MgO/CaS layer forms, along with spinel and calcium silicate.

Copiotrophic marine bacteria are associated with strong iron‐binding ligand production during phytoplankton blooms

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, 2016
Although marine bacteria were identified nearly two decades ago as potential sources for strong iron‐binding organic ligands detected in seawater, specific linkages between ligands detected in natural water and the microbial community remain unclear.

Approximate Treatment of Lepton Distortion in Charged-Current Neutrino Scattering from Nuclei [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
The partial-wave expansion used to treat the distortion of scattered electrons by the nuclear Coulomb field is simpler and considerably less time-consuming when applied to the production of muons and electrons by low and intermediate-energy neutrinos ...

A Thermodynamic 3D Model for the Simulation of Diffusion‐Controlled Alloying Processes in Heterogeneous Material Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A numerical model resulting from irreversible thermodynamics for describing transport processes is introduced, focusing on thermodynamic activity gradients as the actual driving force for diffusion. Implemented in CUDA C++ and using CalPhaD methods for determining the necessary activity data, the model accurately simulates interdiffusion in aluminum ...

Turbulence, Inequality, and Cheap Steel [PDF]

open access: yes
Iron and steel production grew dramatically in the U.S. when mass production technologies for steel were adopted in the 1860s. According to new measures presented in this study, earnings inequality rose within the iron and steel industries about 1870 ...

Zein‐Based Adhesives: Sustainable Extraction and Application in Bioadhesive Technologies

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Zein is extracted from corn gluten meal using a simple and scalable process with high yield (~90%). The resulting protein is applied in bioadhesives modified with Ca2+ and Fe3+ ions, exhibiting substrate‐dependent adhesion. The findings demonstrate competitive bonding performance and highlight the role of ionic interactions in tuning adhesion ...

Effect of Dissimilatory Iron Reduction on the Reduction of CH4 Production in Landfill Conditions

open access: yesJournal of Chemistry, 2019
A high solid anaerobic incubation system was used to study the effect of dissimilatory iron reduction on the inhibition of methanogenesis in a landfill. Different iron sources including FeC6H5O7, Fe2(SO4)3, Fe2O3, and Fe0 were studied. The different iron

Derived Demand for Food Nutrients as Welfare Indicator of Biofortified Crops: High-Iron Rice in the Philippines [PDF]

open access: yes
The study estimates potential consumer gains from the introduction of High-Iron Rice in the Philippines. By deriving the demand for dietary iron from a national survey on household food consumption and expenditure, we project consumer welfare ...
