A summary of the history of electric ironmaking furnaces, including open-bath types, electric shaft furnaces, and low-shaft electric furnaces, this article also describes industrial installations. Economic comparisons are made between blast furnaces and electric-furnace practices using ore, agglomerates, and preheated and prereduced charging materials.

Developments in Alternative Ironmaking
Transactions of the Indian Institute of Metals, 2013Alternative ironmaking processes compete with the blast furnace process route. The blast furnace, the most important hot metal producer, has improved over the years and continues to do so. Consequently replacing the blast furnace is a formidable task. The success rate of alternative processes has been low, i.e. limited to niche applications.

Economic information about ironmaking
Applied Economics, 1990Ironmaking is an important world-wide industry. Iron produced in blast furnaces is a crucial inout for almost three-quarters of the steel produced in the world according to the International Iron and Steel Institute. Few industries have recieved as much attention as the steel industry, yet very little is known about the cost structure of ironmaking ...

1. The best approach to water treatment is to avoid contaminating the water in the first place. This approach starts with the design of the furnace and involves the entire blast furnace plant and its operation. 2. Water systems should be arranged to keep clean and dirty streams separate and to concentrate as much of the contamination as ...

Thermal plasma systems are providing a major new technology for basic ironmaking with the added benefits of process reductant flexibility and potential for reduced capital cost. Industrial scale plasma systems (1,000 to 8,000 kW) have been installed and operated in both pilot and production facilities.
