The variability of irritant reactions requires that irritants be thought of as having a range of concentrations that produce reactions. The concept of an ID50 helps to keep some of these variables in mind. Individuals may have altered irritant thresholds because of eczematous dermatitis elsewhere, strongly positive patch tests, and factors that enhance

Irritant dermatitis, irritancy and its role in allergic contact dermatitis
Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, 2002Irritant contact dermatitis is the clinical result of sufficient inflammation arising from release of pro-inflammatory cytokines from skin cells (principally keratinocytes) in response to (usually) chemical stimuli. Different clinical forms may arise. The three main pathophysiological changes seen are skin barrier disruption, epidermal cellular changes

Thoughts on irritant contact dermatitis
Contact Dermatitis, 1981An attempt is made to formulate some kind of working hypothesis concerning the pathophysiology, clinical appearance and treatment of irritant contact dermatitis.Acute irritant dermatitis may he caused by one single overwhelming external exposure of comparatively short duration. It is usually accidental and therefore recognized early as cause and effect.

Irritant Contact Dermatitis ersus Allergic Contact Dermatitis
2004The current understanding of mechanisms of both irritant and allergic dermatitis does not allow for establishing pertinent and practical criteria for a clear-cut differentiation between them. Differences between irritants and allergens are more conceptual than verifiable.

Prevention of irritant contact dermatitis.
European journal of dermatology : EJD, 2002The prevention of skin diseases is accepted as an important part of occupational dermatology. Irritant dermatitis in particular, is a skin disease which can be avoided by preventional measures. Hence, an early introduction of trainees to preventional measures seems to be necessary to avoid bad habits which then become a matter of routine.
