Fundamentalism is a commonly-used term in describing the ultra-conservative expres-sions of Islamic faith groups. Amongst many scholars of Islam, there is a preference for terms such as Islamism. Although Islamic fundamentalism is indeed a modern phenomenon, it cannot be properly understood outside the larger context of Islamic faith and Muslim history.
