Floral traits and hermaphrodite abundance shape female advantage in a gynodioecious plant

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Gynodioecy is maintained through female advantage in seed fitness that depends on the sex ratio of a population. We hypothesized that females of Silene acaulis would exhibit floral traits associated with elevated outcross pollination and that sex ratio would impact pollen limitation and inbreeding depression such that female advantage ...

A tribal‐scale phylogenomic perspective on ancestry and major lineages of the allotetraploid Hawaiian silversword alliance (Madieae, Compositae)

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Disentangling the ancestry of insular plant lineages is important for resolving their evolutionary histories but often complicated by polyploidy, an overrepresented condition in remote island floras. We used a phylogenomic approach to study the origin of subgenomes of the tetraploid Hawaiian silversword alliance and advance ...

Fine‐scale genetic structure of the cloud forest tree Ocotea psychotrioides revealed by genome‐wide SNP data

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Recent advances in genomic technologies now enable the reconstruction of evolutionary histories at fine spatial scales, illuminating the complex dynamics that shape biodiversity patterns in naturally discontinuous, archipelago‐like ecosystems such as cloud forests.

Negotiating contested spaces and places: Narratives of social suffering and resistance in racialized Cape Town communities

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Community Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract This study employs a schizocartographic approach to explore community narratives of space, memory, and violence in Kraaifontein, Cape Town. Through participants' accounts, ordinary places—gardens, shops, blocks, sports grounds, and streets—emerge as ambivalent geographies where trauma, resilience, and belonging intersect.
