Radio jets clearing the way through galaxies: the view from Hi and molecular gas [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2014
Massive gas outflows are considered a key component in the process of galaxy formation and evolution. Because of this, they are the topic of many studies aimed at learning more about their occurrence, location and physical conditions as well as the ...

ULTRAFAST OUTFLOWS: GALAXY-SCALE ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEUS FEEDBACK [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We show, using global three-dimensional grid-based hydrodynamical simulations, that ultrafast outflows (UFOs) from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) result in considerable feedback of energy and momentum into the interstellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy.

Shock within a shock: revisiting the radio flares of NS merger ejecta and gamma-ray burst-supernovae [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Fast ejecta expelled in binary neutron star (NS) mergers or energetic supernovae (SNe) should produce late-time synchrotron radio emission as the ejecta shocks into the surrounding ambient medium.

High-velocity-dispersion cold gas in ULIRG Outflows - I. Direct simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Observations have revealed cold gas with large velocity dispersions (ˇ 300 km/s)within the hot outows of ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). This gas maytrace its origin to the Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) fragmentation of a super-bubble or mayarise on ...

Relativistic jet feedback in high-redshift galaxies – I. Dynamics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We present the results of three dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of interaction of AGN jets with a dense turbulent two-phase interstellar medium, which would be typical of high redshift galaxies.

Feedback from quasars: The prevalence and impact of radio jets

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2019
I will present our ongoing multi-wavelength study on the prevalence and impact of radio jets in a sample of z < 0.2 type 2 ‘obscured’ quasars who’s high bolometric luminosities make them ideal local analogues of distant, more common, quasars.

Non-thermal emission from microquasar/ISM interaction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Context. The interaction of microquasar jets with their environment can produce non-thermal radiation as is the case for extragalactic outflows impacting on their surroundings.

Compliant Pneumatic Feet with Real‐Time Stiffness Adaptation for Humanoid Locomotion

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A compliant pneumatic foot with real‐time variable stiffness enables humanoid robots to adapt to changing terrains. Using onboard vision and pressure control, the foot modulates stiffness within each gait cycle, reducing impact forces and improving balance. The design, cast in soft silicone with embedded air chambers and Kevlar wrapping, offers durable,

Origami‐Inspired Structural Design for Aquatic‐Terrestrial Amphibious Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work presents a lightweight amphibious origami robot actuated by a single shape memory alloy wire. A rigid foldable origami structure with displacement amplification enables efficient terrestrial crawling and aquatic swimming. The addition of fan‐shaped units allows controllable turning in both environments.
