C I and CO in nearby spiral galaxies. I. Line ratio and abundance variations at ∼200 pc scales

open access: yes, 2023
We present new neutral atomic carbon [C I] (3P1 → 3P0) mapping observations within the inner ∼7 kpc and ∼4 kpc of the disks of NGC 3627 and NGC 4321 at a spatial resolution of 190 pc and 270 pc, respectively, using the Atacama Large Millimeter ...

The study of reactions and molecules involved in the formation of prebiotic molecules [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Through my time in graduate school, I have worked on three different gas phase spectroscopy research projects, performed on three unique and different apparatuses, all with astronomical relevance. At the center of these projects is the question, how life

Weak Interactions in Interstellar Chemistry: How Do Open Shell Molecules Interact with Closed Shell Molecules?

open access: yes, 2019
The interstellar medium (ISM) is home to several open shell and closed shell molecules considered to be unusual or highly unstable on Earth. The chemistry of these molecules in the ISM has been widely studied over many decades.

Modelling and observations of molecules in discs around young stars [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This thesis contains a study of molecules within circumstellar discs around young stars. Firstly, the chemistry of a disc around a young, Class 0 protostar is modelled.

Pathways and pitfalls: a qualitative study of student experiences in biomedical science education

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biomedical science students from underrepresented backgrounds face barriers including financial strain, disrupted laboratory access and cultural exclusion. Peer networks provide vital support when institutional systems are difficult to navigate. To create inclusive learning environments and achieve academic success, educators should blend active, hands‐

Steering Oxygen Activation Pathways via Redox Dual‐Defects in 2D Hydrated WO3 for High‐Yield Singlet Oxygen Evolution

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Redox dual‐defects (Cs substitution and O vacancies) in 2D hydrated WO3 steer O2 activation toward selective singlet oxygen evolution. WO‐CO achieves 8.6–15.8 times higher 1O2 production than single‐defect or pristine catalysts, enabling efficient pollutant mineralization via a pathway‐selective photocatalytic mechanism.

Photolysis of acetonitrile in a water-rich ice as a source of complex organic molecules: CH

open access: yes, 2021
Context. Many C-, O-, and H-containing complex organic molecules (COMs) have been observed in the interstellar medium (ISM) and their formation has been investigated in laboratory experiments.

Artificial Intelligence‐Assisted Workflow for Transmission Electron Microscopy: From Data Analysis Automation to Materials Knowledge Unveiling

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
AI‐Assisted Workflow for (Scanning) Transmission Electron Microscopy: From Data Analysis Automation to Materials Knowledge Unveiling. Abstract (Scanning) transmission electron microscopy ((S)TEM) has significantly advanced materials science but faces challenges in correlating precise atomic structure information with the functional properties of ...

Microscopic Insights into Magnetic Warping and Time‐Reversal Symmetry Breaking in Topological Surface States of Rare‐Earth‐Doped Bi2Te3

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetic doping of the topological insulator Bi2Te3 with erbium adatoms induces out‐of‐plane magnetism and breaks time‐reversal symmetry, opening a Dirac gap and driving a Fermi surface transition from hexagonal to star‐of‐David geometry. Microscopy, spectroscopy, and magnetic dichroism reveal atomically controlled magnetic interactions that tailor the

Interstellar atoms, molecules and diffuse bands toward

open access: yes, 2008
Aims. Supernovae offer the unique possibility to probe diffuse extra-galactic sightlines via observation of the optical transitions of atoms, molecules and the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs).
