Effect of refeeding on polyamine biosynthesis in isolated enterocytes
American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, 1986Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity has been found to be preferentially associated with small intestinal villus cells rather than crypt cells in the rat. In the present study, ODC, S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (SAMDC), and polyamines were measured in isolated enterocytes to determine which cell populations increased polyamine biosynthetic ...

Binding of enterotoxigenicEscherichia colito isolated enterocytes and intestinal mucus
Microbial Pathogenesis, 1997Binding of human enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) to the small intestine is a prerequisite for colonization and is mediated by colonization factor (CF) antigens. Coli surface antigen 6 (CS6) is considered a CF but binding to isolated enterocytes has not been established.

Quantitation of metabolites of isolated chicken enterocytes using NMR spectroscopy
American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, 1989Isolated enterocytes prepared from chicken small intestine were studied by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Perchloric acid extracts of cells were prepared from duodenum, jejunum, and ileum, and concentrations of 19 different metabolites were determined after the virtually complete assignment of all peaks in the aliphatic region of the ...

Phlorizin binding to isolated enterocytes: Membrane potential and sodium dependence
The Journal of Membrane Biology, 1986Phlorizin binding is studied in isolated intestinal epithelial cells of the chick. Cells are ATP depleted to allow extensive manipulation of ionic gradients and membrane potential (delta psi). Phlorizin binding is assayed at steady state. Carrier specific phlorizin binding is defined as D-glucose (90 mM) inhibitable binding.

Transport Studies in Isolated Enterocytes
1991The purpose of this paper is to illustrate experimental strategies that may be adopted in the laboratory to approach transport studies in isolated enterocytes with isotopic methods. Since the work carried out with this biological preparation is vast I shall focus on methodologies set up to: a) investigate the energetics of organic solute active ...

Parenteral nutrition modifies glucose and glutamine metabolism in rat isolated enterocytes
Gastroenterology, 1997After small bowel resection, parenteral nutrition is often required to provide energy and nitrogen supplies and also to stimulate intestinal adaptation, despite the absence of glutamine in formulas. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of nutrient supply route on fuel utilization by enterocytes.Rats received an intravenous or ...

Cytoplasmic pH in isolated rat enterocytes. Role of Na+/H+ exchanger
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1988The cytoplasmic pH (pHi) was determined in isolated rat intestinal cells with four methods. The pHi of cells in physiological saline buffered with Hepes (pH 7.3) at 37 degrees C was close to 7.0. The most reliable method, using the fluorescent pH indicator 2',7'-bis(carboxyethyl)-5(6)-carboxyfluorescein (BCECF), furnished a mean value of 7.03 +/- 0.05 (

Thiamin uptake by rat isolated enterocytes: Relationship between transport and phosphorylation
Archives Internationales de Physiologie, de Biochimie et de Biophysique, 1992The membrane and intracellular steps of thiamin (T) uptake were studied in rat isolated enterocytes. The membrane step was investigated by using enterocytes deenergized with 25 microM rotenone and a short (30 s) incubation time, while the intracellular metabolic step was assessed by using normoenergized (normal) cells incubated for a longer (30 min ...

Glycyl-L-sarcosine transport by ATP-depleted isolated enterocytes from chicks
American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, 1990Normally energized and ATP-depleted isolated chicken enterocytes have been used to investigate the energetics of intestinal glycyl-L-sarcosine (Gly-Sar) transport, and the results were compared with those obtained for 3-O-methyl-D-glucose (3-OMG) active transport, which is known to be energized by the electrochemical Na+ gradient.

Sulfation in isolated enterocytes of guinea pig: Dependence on inorganic sulfate
Biochemical Pharmacology, 1984Isolated intestinal epithelial cells of the guinea-pig were used to study uptake and metabolism of inorganic sulfate in the jejunum (proximal cells) and ileum (distal cells). Proximal enterocytes accumulated sulfate 1.5-fold and distal enterocytes 3.1-fold. Accumulation was almost linearly related to substrate concentrations up to 5 mM.
