Isolation and Characterization of Bacterial Cellulase Producers for Biomass Deconstruction: A Microbiology Laboratory Course

open access: yesJournal of Microbiology & Biology Education, 2019
The conversion of biomass to biofuels presents a solution to one of the largest global challenges of our era, climate change. A critical part of this pipeline is the process of breaking down cellulosic sugars from plant matter to be used by microbes ...

Profiling Localized Immunomodulation and Drug Biodistribution within a Subcutaneous Vascularized Niche for Cell Transplantation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We studied how five common immunosuppressants behave when delivered directly to a transplant site instead of systemically. Using a vascularized implant for islet transplantation, we show that local delivery protects grafts, limits drug spread to the rest of the body, and produces distinct immune signatures.

Determination of the Antibiotic Resistance Profile of Student Cell Phones

open access: yesJournal of Microbiology & Biology Education, 2012
Sampling of common use items (e.g., student cell phones) for bacterial presence, identification, and antibiotic resistance profiling helps students to recognize the need for routine cleaning of personal items and encourages thoughtful use of currently ...

Beyond Extracellular Vesicle (EV) Hype: Practical Solutions and Remaining Hurdles in EV Research, Manufacturing, and Clinical Translation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanoscale mediators of intercellular communication with diverse molecular cargoes that reflect their cell of origin. Advances in isolation, detection, and single‐particle analytics have revealed increasing molecular and functional heterogeneity, while exposing limitations in how EV identity and activity are ...

Variability in contact precautions to control the nosocomial spread of multi-drug resistant organisms in the endemic setting: a multinational cross-sectional survey

open access: yesAntimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control, 2018
Background Definitions and practices regarding use of contact precautions and isolation to prevent the spread of gram-positive and gram-negative multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) are not uniform.

Synergistic Sunlight‐Activated Photodynamic and Near‐Infrared‐Induced Mild Photothermal Therapy for Infected Wound Healing Using Functionalized Nano‐Bi2WO6 Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work proposes a multifunctional Bi2WO6:Yb,Er@CuS@CS nanocomposite that integrates photodynamic therapy (PDT), near‐infrared‐triggered photothermal therapy (PTT), and Cu2+ release for infected wound repair. The nanocomposite demonstrates enhanced antibacterial efficacy via combined PDT, PTT, and Cu2+ release, effective immunomodulatory by mild ...

Microbiological characteristics of hypermucoviscous Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from different body fluids

open access: yesThe Journal of Infection in Developing Countries, 2017
Introduction: Reports of hypermucoviscous Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKP) isolated from fluids other than blood or abscess are rare. The aim of the study was to compare clinical and microbiological characteristics of hvKP found in blood or abscess fluid with those isolated from other loci. Methodology: A total of 24 non-repetitive hvKP isolates were

EEPD1 Inhibition Unleashes Antitumor Immunity in Colorectal Cancer by Activating the cGAS‐STING Pathway

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In colorectal cancer, high expression of the DNA repair protein EEPD1 correlates with immune exclusion and poor prognosis. This study demonstrates that EEPD1 depletion induces genomic instability, leading to cytosolic DNA accumulation and subsequent activation of the cGAS‐STING‐type I interferon pathway. This cascade remodels the tumor microenvironment

Dynamic Shifts in ER–Plasma Membrane Junctions Signaling Define Pro‐Metastatic N‐Glycosylation and Predict Prostate Cancer Progression

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Prostate cancer remains a leading cause of male cancer death, yet screening cannot reliably identify aggressive disease, underscoring the need for tissue biomarkers. It is shown that primary tumors increase ER–plasma membrane junction signaling via STIM1/ORP5, whereas metastasis features their loss, Golgi dispersal, and rapid conversion of high‐mannose
