Isoptera ☆

2017
Isoptera (termites) is a small order of insects containing about 3000 described species. Their origin dates back to the late Jurassic, and the oldest fossil is found in limestone deposits of 130 million years ago (Cretaceous). Termites consume plant materials in all stages of decomposition, from sound wood to mineralized soil, and are superabundant in ...

INFRAORDER ISOPTERA Although the respiratory physiology of termites (especially as it relates to their digestive system) has been studied for decades, micro-CT scans of respiratory architectures have been absent. The tracheal scans of the reproductive caste Reticulatermes flavipes and soldier caster Zootermopsis angusticollis shown here detail the ...

Polyethism inMacrotermes bellicosus (Isoptera)

Insectes Sociaux, 1988
Caste and age polyethism was investigated by way of newly developed sampling methods used in field colonies ofM. bellicosus. Major workers make up 70% of foraging populations, whereas minor workers are predominant in spontaneous construction (97%), emergency construction (78%) and attendance of the queen (85%). The only task correlated with a high rate

Cryoprotection in dampwood termites (Termopsidae, Isoptera)

Journal of Insect Physiology, 2010
In contrast to the majority of the Order, the dampwood termites of the family Termopsidae found in colder regions can experience frost and snow, either in cool temperate areas at high latitudes (45 degrees ), or alpine areas at high elevations (>1000m). This suggests that dampwood termites are adapted to cold climates.

Defensive glands in Stylotermitidae (Blattodea, Isoptera)

Arthropod Structure & Development
The large abundance of termites is partially achieved by their defensive abilities. Stylotermitidae represented by a single extant genus, Stylotermes, is a member of a termite group Neoisoptera that encompasses 83% of termite species and 94% of termite genera and is characterized by the presence of the frontal gland. Within Neoisoptera, Stylotermitidae
