Activation and Excystation of Isospora felis and Isospora rivolta Sporozoites

Studies on the activation and excystation of I. felis and I. rivolta sporozoites revealed that, although some differences were apparent between the two, both were capable of activation under a wide range of conditions. Activation of both species took place in trypsin and bile between 21 and 43 C (the range tested) occurring rapidly at 39 C.

Summary and Conclusions 1.  During the campaign in Okinawa, the incidence of infection with Isospora hominis as determined in hospitalized patients exceeded 0.75 per cent. 2.  In five patients studied intensively, no symptoms could be ascribed to the Isospora infection, although in some of these the cysts were present in large numbers.

There was a considerable variation in the size, shape and the state of development of the oocysts in freshly passed stools. 80–90% of the oocysts completed sporulation in 24 hours in potassium bichromate solution.
