Questioning the existence of a unique ground state structure for Si clusters

open access: yes, 2006
Density functional and quantum Monte Carlo calculations challenge the existence of a unique ground state structure for certain Si clusters. For Si clusters with more than a dozen atoms the lowest ten isomers are close in energy and for some clusters ...

Modulating Surface‐Active Hydrogen for Facilitating Nitrate‐to‐Ammonia Electroreduction on Layered Double Hydroxides Nanosheets

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The NiCuFe‐layered double hydroxides nanosheets are synthesized for facilitating nitrate‐to‐ammonia with a high ammonia yield of 1.64 mmol h−1 cm−2, Faradaic efficiency of 94.8% and stability for 15 cycles. The assembled Zn‐nitrate battery delivers a remarkable power density of 12.4 mW cm−2.

A Tracer Diffusion Study of Diverse Photo‐Ionic Phenomena in Strontium Titanate

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Two strong interfacial photo‐ionic effects are demonstrated for the model system SrTiO3 through the application of isotope exchange experiments: UV illumination is found to enhance the oxygen surface exchange coefficient by several orders of magnitude and to depress the surface space‐charge potential substantially.

SI‐bioATRP in Mesoporous Silica for Size‐Exclusion Driven Local Polymer Placement

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An enzyme‐catalyzed surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐bioATRP) of an anionic monomer within mesoporous silica particles, using hemoglobin as a catalyst, allows for controlling the location of the formed polymer via size‐exclusion effects between the nanopores and the biomacromolecules, thereby opening routes to functional ...

Correcting for Biogenic Gas Matrix Effects on Laser-Based Pore Water-Vapor Stable Isotope Measurements

open access: yesVadose Zone Journal, 2018
The isotopic composition (δH, δO) of pore water is an invaluable tracer for the minimally invasive study of subsurface water flow and transport processes.

Nuclear volume effects in equilibrium stable isotope fractionations of mercury, thallium and lead

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2015
The nuclear volume effects (NVEs) of Hg, Tl and Pb isotope systems are investigated with careful evaluation on quantum relativistic effects via the Dirac’s formalism of full-electron wave function.

Toward Scalable Solutions for Silver‐Based Gas Diffusion Electrode Fabrication for the Electrochemical Conversion of CO2 – A Perspective

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, the preparation techniques for silver‐based gas diffusion electrodes used for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (eCO2R) are systematically reviewed and compared with respect to their scalability. In addition, physics‐based and data‐driven modeling approaches are discussed, and a perspective is given on how modeling can aid ...

Enhanced Nitric Oxide Electroreduction to Ammonia via Modulating Spin‐Polarization of Fe Single‐Atom Catalysts

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A strategic spin‐polarization suppression in Fe single‐atom catalysts is proposed to enhance electrocatalytic reduction of NO to NH3. Employing a top‐down electrospinning strategy, self‐supported FeSAC with Fe‐N3S1 coordination structure and spin‐state transition is engineered from high‐spin to low‐spin.
