Nuclear spectra of oxygen isotopes

Abstract The spectra of O17, O18, O19 and O20 are considered in the framework of the shell model. The low lying energy levels of these nuclei are found to be well described by jj-coupling configurations involving the 1 d 5 2 and 2 s 1 2 orbits.

I HAVE recently been studying the vibrational energy functions of molecules, in connexion with a recalculation of heats of dissociation, and have noticed that the equation given by Dieke and Babcock (Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci., 13, 670; 1927) for the upper level of the atmospheric bands of oxygen has an unusually large coefficient for the n3 term.

Isotopic analysis of oxygen in inorganic compounds

A semimicro method has been developed for analyzing the isotopic composition of various inorganic compounds, includlng oxides, anions, and water. The samples are heated to 400 deg C with a mixture of HgCl/sub 2/ and Hg(CN)/sub 2/; the CO/sub 2/ formed is purified for analysis over zinc amalgam at 200 deg C.
