Ontogenetic and spatial variation in the trophic ecology of the shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) in temperate eastern Australia

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) is a fast‐swimming pelagic shark of global ecological and socioeconomic importance, yet it is relatively understudied in temperate eastern Australian waters. This study investigated the trophic ecology of mako sharks using stable isotope analysis (SIA) of nitrogen (δ15N), carbon (δ13C) and sulphur (δ34S ...

Modelling compressive loading in large‐bodied mammals reveals distinct biomechanical strategies in proboscidean humeri

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Graviportal proboscideans differ in limb morphology, adopting slender or more robust long bone morphotypes. Finite element analyses (FEA) on extant and extinct taxa reveal functional differences between morphotypes, with robust humeri exhibiting lower peak stress under neutral and off‐axis loading.

Ecological and genomic variation in ectomycorrhizal fungal exploration types

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) produce mycelia with variable extension and complexity, which can be classified according to soil ‘exploration types’ (ETs). ETs have received attention as one of the few mycorrhizal trait frameworks, but without an empirical classification of ET functional diversity and environmental preferences, understanding and ...

Experimental and genomic evidence clarifies the mycorrhizal helper role of a widespread bacterium in Bishop pine forests

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Hypothetical model of Paraburkholderia–EcMF–Bishop pine interactions. Summary Whether a widespread bacterial strain of Paraburkholderia can enhance the physiological responses of ectomycorrhizal fungi (EcMF) and host Bishop pine seedling growth remains unclear. We developed a ‘top‐down meets bottom‐up’ approach that harmonized data from molecular field

Reciprocal transport of carbon and nitrogen between plants and the hyphosphere microbiome in a temperate grassland

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Overview of the experimental design and 13CO2 pulse‐labeling approach in the field. Summary Despite its relevance for plant nutrient acquisition, the role of the hyphosphere in structuring fungal–bacterial networks and mediating carbon–nitrogen (C–N) exchange under field conditions remains unclear.

Extending the limits of algal growth and stress resilience – the desert alga Chlorella ohadii as an emerging model

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Multiple facets of Chlorella ohadii biological properties and potential as a research model and biotechnology platform. Summary Since its isolation from the sand dunes of the Negev Desert over a decade ago, the unicellular green alga Chlorella ohadii has turned into a reference organism for studying photosynthesis, metabolism, and abiotic stress ...

Ozone Susceptibility of Tropical Tree Species

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Tropical forests account for approximately 60% of global terrestrial photosynthesis, yet their function into the future may be compromised by rising ground‐level ozone (O3) pollution. Although O3 is known to impair plant productivity, the physiological mechanisms underlying interspecific variation in O3 susceptibility—especially among tropical
