Isotropic submanifolds with pointwise planar normal sections

Journal of Geometry, 1986
Let \(M\) be an \(n\)-dimensional submanifold of a Euclidean \(m\)-space \(E^ m\). For a unit tangent vector t at a point \(p\) in \(M\), the vector \(t\) and the normal space of \(M\) at \(p\) determine an \((m-n+1)\)-dimensional vector space \(E(p,t)\) in \(E^ m\).

Normal incidence reflection coefficient approximation at an isotropic–poroelastic interface

Geophysical Prospecting, 2023
AbstractSeismic response from porous sediments can be used in reservoir characterization and fluid detection. Reflection coefficient at the isotropic/poroelastic interface is essential to reveal seismic response from the fluid‐saturated deposits. The exact normal incidence reflection coefficient is given by complex mathematic expression and not very ...

Interaction of Isotropic Turbulence with a Normal Shock Wave

Applied Scientific Research, 1993
The evolution of incompressible and compressible isotropic 2-d turbulent fields interacting with a normal shock wave up to Mach numbers of 2.4 was investigated by means of direct numerical simulation using an ENO scheme. A comparison of statistics with linear analysis results is presented.

Effective permittivity of log-normal isotropic random media

Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General, 1995
Summary: A method of deriving the effective permittivity \(\varepsilon^{\text{eff}}\) of log-normal \(d\)-dimensional isotropic media is developed. The approach is based on applying the regularized Green function technique for the Laplace operator. The feasibility of exact determining of the effective permittivity is analysed by deriving \(\varepsilon^{

Isotropic plate elements with shear and normal strain deformations

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 1987
AbstractPlate‐bending finite elements are developed for thin and moderately thick plates. The element takes into account the influence of the transverse normal strain and the transverse shear effects. For the computation of the stresses, an additional plate element is developed to determine the inplane displacements and forces.

The normal spectral emissivity of isotropic and anisotropic materials

Carbon, 1966
Abstract The correlation of structural anisotropy with the normal spectral emissivity of pyrolytic graphite is discussed relative to polycrystalline graphite and to isotropic single crystal nickel. Results reported include data in the near infrared (1.5–13μ) at temperatures between 800 and 1200°C in a hydrogen atmosphere. Photomicrographs (up to 1000×

A new shear and normal deformation theory for isotropic, transversely isotropic, laminated composite and sandwich plates

International Journal of Mechanics and Materials in Design, 2014
In the present study, a sinusoidal shear and normal deformation theory taking into account effects of transverse shear as well as transverse normal is used to develop the analytical solution for the bidirectional bending analysis of isotropic, transversely isotropic, laminated composite and sandwich rectangular plates.

Normalized stiffness ratios for mechanical characterization of isotropic acoustic foams

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2013
This paper presents a method for the mechanical characterization of isotropic foams at low frequency. The objective of this study is to determine the Young's modulus, the Poisson's ratio, and the loss factor of commercially available foam plates. The method is applied on porous samples having square and circular sections.

Consequences of deviatoric normality in plasticity with isotropic strain hardening

International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 1982
AbstractFor many soils experimental evidence suggests that deviation from normality between the plastic strain increments and the yield function is exhibited mainly in the volumetric behaviour, whereas the deviatoric behaviour exhibits normality. An analysis of the consequence of this observation is presented, and it leads to an expression for the ...
