The evaluation of boundary‐layer turbulence in high‐resolution numerical weather prediction simulations using Doppler lidar

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
A new method compares both kilometer and sub‐kilometre weather model simulations with Doppler lidar observations to assess the representation of boundary‐layer turbulence. While bulk boundary‐layer properties are well represented, vertical velocity variance is strongly underestimated in both simulations.

Sustainable Carbon as Efficient Support for Metal-Based Nanocatalyst: Applications in Energy Harvesting and Storage

open access: yesMolecules, 2020
Sustainable activated carbon can be obtained from the pyrolysis/activation of biomass wastes coming from different origins. Carbon obtained in this way shows interesting properties, such as high surface area, electrical conductivity, thermal and chemical

Isolation, Insularity and Resilience: A Review of the Geophysical, Socioeconomic, and Environmental Vulnerabilities of Gran Canaria and Lesvos Islands for Policy Interventions to Global Change

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The dynamic nature of small islands being geographically isolated and their perceived connectedness with global networks complicates research attempts to draw general conclusions on whether insularity leads to marginalization or strengthens their resilience for sustainable development.

Distinct roles of haspin in stem cell division and male gametogenesis

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
The kinase haspin phosphorylates histone H3 at threonine-3 (H3T3ph) during mitosis. H3T3ph provides a docking site for the Chromosomal Passenger Complex at the centromere, enabling correction of erratic microtubule-chromosome contacts.

From prediction to intervention: Paradigm shifts in causal AI for precision medicine and large‐scale cohorts

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Large‐scale cohorts and multimodal biomedical data have enabled powerful predictive models for clinical risk stratification, but prediction alone cannot guide effective interventions. This review introduces causal artificial intelligence as a design‐first framework that integrates target trial emulation, causal discovery, and robust effect estimation ...

Evaluation of GPR Waveforms for a Custom RFSoM-Based Tomography System

open access: yesApplied Sciences
High-resolution soil moisture monitoring in a lysimeter requires precise Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) systems that can provide clean time-domain data for a Full-Waveform Inversion (FWI) algorithm.

An Intrathermocline Eddy Observed in the Southeastern Tropical Indian Ocean

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
An intrathermocline eddy (ITE) was observed over the southeastern tropical Indian Ocean (SETIO) from early February to early May 2020. The ITE was generated near the southwest of Java, and was long lived with a long propagation distance.
