Effects of Item Wording on Sex Bias
Journal of Educational Measurement, 1989This study examined the effects of gender‐related item‐wording changes on the performance of male and female examinees. Mathematics word problems and English language items were created in neuter, male, and female versions. Items were administered to randomly equivalent samples of about 300 high school juniors and seniors.

Reducing Item-Specific Nonresponse Bias
The Journal of Experimental Education, 1978This article describes a method of dealing with partially-responded-to questionnaires in survey research which utilizes nonparametric Bayesian discriminant analysis to predict missing responses based on “profiles” of the partial and the “complete” respondents. Some background of nonresponse bias in survey research is discussed, and two other methods of

Accounting for Statistical Artifacts in Item Bias Research [PDF]
Theoretically preferred IRT bias detection procedures were applied to both a mathematics achievement and vocabulary test. The data were from black and white seniors on the High School and Beyond data files. To account for statistical artifacts, each analysis was repeated on randomly equivalent samples of blacks and whites ( n’s = 1,500).

This study examines the construct validity of the Young Schema-Questionnaire at the item level in a Dutch population. Possible bias of items in relation to the presence or absence of psychopathology, gender, and educational level was analyzed, using a ...

5 Differential Item Functioning and Item Bias
2006Publisher Summary This chapter presents a description of many of the commonly employed methods in the detection of item bias. Because much of the statistical detection of item bias makes the use of differential item functioning (DIF) procedures, the majority of this chapter focuses on the description of statistical methods for the analysis of DIF ...

Two simulation studies were conducted to investigate the effects of the practice of item parceling. In Study 1, unidimensional sets of normally and nonnormally distributed item-level data were categorized into 2-, 3-, and 4-item parcels.

The proximity effect: The role of inter-item distance on reverse-item bias [PDF]
article i nfo Article history: First received in November 22, 2008 and was under review for 5 months This paper introduces the proximity effect model. The proximity effect model explains the correlation between two items as a function of (1) items' conceptual relationship (i.e., nonreversed items measuring the same construct; reversed items measuring ...

AbstractThis brief note suggests a new method of measuring item bias. A test for item bias is also suggested that is based on standard asymptotic results.
