ITRAX: description and evaluation of a new multi-function X-ray core scanner

Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 2006
Abstract A new automated multi-function core scanning instrument, named ITRAX, has been developed that records optical, radiographic and elemental variations from sediment half cores up to 1.8 m long at a resolution as fine as 200 μm. An intense micro-X-ray beam focused through a flat capillary waveguide is used to irradiate samples to enable

Investigating the impact of sample desiccation on Itrax XRF core scanner signal reproducibility

Island Arc
AbstractSediment samples tend to dry out during storage and are, therefore, stored refrigerated at about 4°C after wrapping in plastic foil. During XRF core scanning however, the samples must be taken out of their cover, increasing the risk of drying and formation of desiccation cracks on the surface.

A sample carrier for measuring discrete powdered samples with an ITRAX XRF core scanner

open access: yesX-Ray Spectrometry, 2017
The elemental composition of discrete powdered sediment samples can be measured by the energy‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) system that is installed in XRF core scanners. Because an appropriate sample carrier for powdered samples is currently not available, for example, for the ITRAX XRF core scanner, such a carrier is ...

The iBox-FC: A new containment vessel for Itrax X-ray fluorescence core-scanning of freeze cores

Quaternary International, 2019
Abstract A combination of Itrax micro-X-ray fluorescence core scanning (μXRF-CS) and freeze coring can facilitate the development of high-resolution (e.g. sub-decadal) paleoclimate records in lacustrine systems where low sedimentation rates and poorly consolidated “colloidal soup” at the sediment/water interface prevents retrieval and Itrax-μXRF-CS ...

Application of multivariate statistical analyses to Itrax core scanner data for the identification of deep-marine sedimentary facies: A case study in the Galician Continental Margin

open access: yesQuaternary International, 2019
Abstract The validity and usefulness of multivariate statistical tools for the facies characterization in deep-marine environments have been applied on the geochemical, sedimentological and magnetic data from a piston core extracted from the Transitional Zone in the Galician Continental Margin.

Optimization of Itrax Core Scanner Measurement Conditions for Sediments from Submarine Mud Volcanoes

2015
XRF scanners allow fast, high-resolution delivery of geochemical and physical property data from sediment cores. However, lack of standardized protocols for measuring parameter settings can lead to results of inferior quality to the instrument’s real potential, particularly regarding light elements.

Calibration for ED-XRF profiling of coal cores for the Itrax Core Scanner

Powder Diffraction, 2014
Recent developments in instrumentation mean that chemical analysis of large drill cores taken for geological purposes can be performed rapidly at sub-millimetre scales using core scanners equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometers.

Standardization and Calibration of X-Radiographs Acquired with the ITRAX Core Scanner

2015
A calibration procedure that uses a radiographic reference sample (RRS) to compensate for instrumental, time- and sample-related variations encountered with Itrax X-radiographs is introduced. This RRS is always included whenever a core section is run on the Itrax and it allows radiographs to be standardized.

An ITRAX Geochemical Study of Ferromanganiferous Sediments from the Penrhyn Basin, South Pacific Ocean

Marine Georesources & Geotechnology, 2010
Manganese nodules reach abundances in excess of 30 kg per square meter in the Penrhyn Basin, central equatorial South Pacific. In the south of the Basin, they rest on dark brown ferromanganiferous clays, whereas in its northern part, the substrate becomes more calcareous and siliceous.

A geochemical application of the ITRAX scanner to a sediment core containing eastern Mediterranean sapropel units

Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 2006
Abstract The ITRAX micro-X-ray fluoresence (XRF) core scanner has been applied in a sediment geochemistry investigation. The core sections selected contain examples of the organic-rich sedimentary units (sapropels) that form periodically in the eastern Mediterranean basin. Sapropels are visually obvious from their dark coloration,
