ANALYSES OF THE AVIFAUNA AND BIRD POPULATIONS OF THE ISLAND OF ITURUP, GREAT KURIL ISLANDS

Ecological patterns in the formation of the avifauna and bird populations of the Iturup Island were analyzed. Route counts were used along transects of unlimited width. As many as 116 bird species were registered, including 36% revealed to be ubiquitous, another 34% local and further 26% highly local. 71 species were shown to nest.

Liverworts (Marchantiophyta) of the thermal springs of Baransky Vulcano (Iturup Island, Kuril Islands, Russia)

For the first time, a complete list of liverworts from the thermal habitats of Baransky Volcano of Iturup Island, South Kurils is compiled and analyzed. Based on investigation of four collecting sites, 37 species of liverworts were found in direct zone of source of exposure.

The relative importance of enhancement to the production of Salmon on Iturup Island (Kuril Islands, Russia)

AbstractA historical review of biological enhancement and fisheries for Iturup Island demonstrates that enhancement has significantly increased numbers of chum salmon while pink salmon are produced almost entirely naturally. Fourteen hatcheries currently produce and release chum salmon fry; four of these also generate pink salmon.

Iturup is the largest and most explored island of the Kuril Archipelago. It is known for the activity of tectonic processes, active volcanoes and geothermal sources, and is rich in minerals.
