Free-Living Ice-Nucleating Active Bacteria from High Mountain Lake Habitats

open access: yesMicrobiology Indonesia, 2010
We collected the culturable heterotrophic bacteria from oligotrophic high mountain lake habitats and tested their capability to induce ice formation. Direct plating was carried out using low-nutrient medium at a temperature of between 3 and 4°C.

New Fe II energy levels from stellar spectra [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The spectra of B-type and early A-type stars show numerous unidentified lines in the whole optical range, especially in the 5100 - 5400 A interval. Because Fe II transitions to high energy levels should be observed in this region, we used semiempirical ...

The signature motif of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Pif1 DNA helicase is essential in vivo for mitochondrial and nuclear functions and in vitro for ATPase activity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Pif1 family DNA helicases are conserved from bacteria to humans and have critical and diverse functions in vivo that promote genome integrity. Pif1 family helicases share a 23 amino acid region, called the Pif1 signature motif (SM) that is unique to this

Detection of Bulk Motions in the ICM of the Centaurus Cluster [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Several recent numerical simulations of off-center cluster mergers predict that significant angular momentum with associated velocities of a few x 10^{3} km/s can be imparted to the resulting cluster.

Unveiling the hidden costs: An in-depth examination of the economic impact of sexual and gender-based violence on women in Nairobi, Kenya

open access: yesSocial Sciences and Humanities Open
Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in Kenya disproportionately affects women, resulting in severe socio-economic repercussions. This study examines the hidden economic costs of SGBV and emphasizes the need for targeted policy interventions.

Enhanced Emission Using Thin Li-Halide Cathodic Interlayers for Improved Injection into Poly(p-phenylene vinylene) Derivative PLEDs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
In this study, the effects of thin Li-halide cathodic interlayers on electron injection were examined for electroluminescent layers of polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs). An order of magnitude increase in current density is observed as Li-halide salts

A cross-cultural comparison to find the most promising protein sources for milk and cheese alternatives among four European countries

open access: yesFuture Foods
The transition to more sustainable diets can be facilitated by substituting milk and cheese with plant-based alternatives. To increase the consumption of milk and cheese alternatives, it is important to understand which protein sources are most accepted ...

Materiality, modernity and space: the British banks and their computer centres, 1961-1963 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
British banks in the 1950s were conservative, restrained and non-competitive. They were also early adopters of large-scale electronic computing technology.
