Crawling under the radar: Two novel Paulinella species expand knowledge about the ecology and evolution of a primary plastid‐containing amoeba lineage

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract The genus Paulinella represents a rare, independent case of primary endosymbiosis, providing a unique system to study the early stages of organelle evolution. Here, we expand current understanding of primary plastid endosymbiosis through the discovery and characterization of two novel photosynthetic amoebae, Paulinella marae sp. nov.

Integrating Multiple Data Sources Improves Abundance Estimation in Spatial Capture–Recapture Models

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 10, October 2026.
This study demonstrates how integrating multiple data streams improves abundance estimation for a wide‐ranging marine population, eastern North Pacific blue whales. The application of this approach is valuable to accurately track population size which is critical to guide conservation and management strategies.

Density and Abundance of Cetaceans in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Based on a Spatial/Temporal Analysis of 1986–2006 Line‐Transect Surveys

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 4, October 2026.
ABSTRACT The abundance of cetaceans in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ETP) is estimated using spatial/temporal density modeling and conventional line‐transect approaches. Line‐transect data are analyzed from 10 ship‐based visual sighting surveys from 1986 to 2006 that include 281,000 km of survey effort in a 19.4 million km2 study area.

Optimizing Jack-up vessel strategies for maintaining offshore wind farms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In this paper we present a new two-stage stochastic mathematical programming model that determines the optimal jack-up vessel strategy for an offshore wind farm.

Spatial and temporal evolution of a coastal erg margin: The Middle Jurassic Page Sandstone, southern Utah, USA

open access: yesSedimentology, Volume 73, Issue 6, Page 2081-2119, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Aeolian deflationary events are erosive to static stages where sediment supply is insufficient to support bedform migration and preservation in the rock record. In the vicinity of shallow‐marine environments, inland rises of relative water table and associated generation of deflationary super surfaces may be driven by the onset of ...

Physical and Biogeochemical Ocean Response to Potential Offshore Wind Development Along the U.S. West Coast

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract Planning for floating offshore wind development along the U.S. west coast has prompted questions about how this new ocean use may impact marine ecosystems. Previous research suggests that offshore wind farms will alter wind dynamics and upwelling in this region, but impacts on biogeochemistry have not yet been explored.

Dynamic Response Prediction Model for Jack-Up Platform Pile Legs Based on Random Forest Algorithm

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
Jack-up offshore platforms are widely used in many fields, and it is of great importance to quickly and accurately predict the dynamic response of platform pile leg structures in real time.

Characterization and Meteorological Drivers of Dust Events Over California's Central Valley

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract Dust events in California's Central Valley pose severe risks to public health, regional air quality, and transportation. Yet, the climatology and meteorological drivers of dust events in the region are poorly characterized due to sparse monitoring and limitations of satellite observations.
