ABSTRACT The abundance of cetaceans in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ETP) is estimated using spatial/temporal density modeling and conventional line‐transect approaches. Line‐transect data are analyzed from 10 ship‐based visual sighting surveys from 1986 to 2006 that include 281,000 km of survey effort in a 19.4 million km2 study area.

ABSTRACT Aeolian deflationary events are erosive to static stages where sediment supply is insufficient to support bedform migration and preservation in the rock record. In the vicinity of shallow‐marine environments, inland rises of relative water table and associated generation of deflationary super surfaces may be driven by the onset of ...

FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR STABILITY OF JACK UP DRILLING RIGS ON WORKING POSITION
Jack up drilling platforms are offshore drilling units composed by drilling rig situated on naval structure without self propelling device. Jack up drilling rigs are units used for drilling and completion of deep well bores in offshore oil and gas ...

Probabilistic Prediction of Spudcan Bearing Capacity in Stiff-over-Soft Clay Based on Bayes’ Theorem
During offshore operations of jack-up platforms, the spudcan may experience sudden punch-through failure when penetrating from an overlying stiff clay layer into the underlying soft clay, posing significant risks to platform safety.

Abstract Planning for floating offshore wind development along the U.S. west coast has prompted questions about how this new ocean use may impact marine ecosystems. Previous research suggests that offshore wind farms will alter wind dynamics and upwelling in this region, but impacts on biogeochemistry have not yet been explored.

Effect of Foundation Modeling on Extreme Response of Offshore Jack-up Unit
The demand for operation of mobile jack-up drilling rigs in offshore industry is increasing. Extreme response of jack-up platforms in sea environment requires improving the understanding of their nonlinear behavior.

To predict the penetration depth of the offshore jack-up drilling platform during the preloading process, the fluid-solid coupling theory was introduced to establish the finite element model of the soil-spudcan system in saturated clay. With this model, the spudcan bearing capacity factor was numerically calculated when spudcans penetrated into ...

Characterization and Meteorological Drivers of Dust Events Over California's Central Valley
Abstract Dust events in California's Central Valley pose severe risks to public health, regional air quality, and transportation. Yet, the climatology and meteorological drivers of dust events in the region are poorly characterized due to sparse monitoring and limitations of satellite observations.

Optimizing Jack-up vessel strategies for maintaining offshore wind farms [PDF]
In this paper we present a new two-stage stochastic mathematical programming model that determines the optimal jack-up vessel strategy for an offshore wind farm.
