Biomineral‐Inspired Organic/Inorganic Colloidal Liquid‐Crystalline Hybrids for Photoresponsive Adhesion

A new class of photoresponsive liquid‐crystalline (LC) adhesives based on biomineral‐inspired organic/inorganic colloidal hybrids is reported. These colloidal LC materials are formed by hybridization of a hydroxyapatite nanorod with azobenzene‐based forklike molecules.

Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite

The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.

The Baltic Sea and the Sea of Japan: History of Cooperation
環バルト海の国々は昔から国際協力をしていたので、冷戦後の協力の発展も当然である。他方、環日本海では第二次世界大戦の負の遺産があるので、国際協力が難しいと考えられる。しかし、どこの地域の歴史の中にも戦争の時代と協力の時代があったはずである。本論文の目的は、環バルト海と環日本海の歴史を考察したうえで、双方の地域における協力の発展過程を明らかにすることである。その際、特にハンザという、今、環バルト海圏で広く使われている概念に注意が払われる。また、環日本海圏には「ハンザ時代」があったかどうかについても論じた。

Chitin‐Derived Carbon‐Metal Functional Materials

Programming Nanoscale Reaction Environments via Peptide Localization for Gold Nanoparticle Growth in Liposomal Nanoreactors

The liposome nanoreactor method enables uniform metal nanoparticle synthesis using the interior as a reaction environment. We demonstrate that peptide sequences and lipid compositions act as a functional molecular switch to control reaction environments in liposome nanoreactors.
