Jatropha curcas (L.) trees under north Indian conditions (Lucknow) produce fruits in two major flushes, once during autumn-winter (October-December). The leaves at this time are at the senescence stages and already shedding. The second flush of fruit setting occurs during the summer (April-June) after the leaves have formed during spring (March-April).

Toxicity of Jatropha curcas in sheep and goats

The sequential development of the clinical signs and lesions in the organs of desert sheep and Nubian goats dosed with Jatropha curcas seeds at 0.05, 0.5 and 1 g/kg/day was studied. Diarrhoea, reduced water consumption, dehydration, sunken eyes, inappetence and loss in condition were the important signs of J curcas poisoning in sheep and goats.

Abstract Male strain A.S.1 mice were fed with Jatropha curcas seeds at concentrations of 50, 40, 20, 10, 5 and 1% of the diet. The effects of the different dietary concentrations on mortality, clinical response and pathological changes were studied. A high mortality was found in mice on 50 and 40% Jatropha.
