Comparative Morphology and Homology of the Hyoid Apparatus and Associated Muscles in Beloniform Fishes (Teleostei: Atherinomorpha)

Homology of the branchiostegals rays in atherinomorph fishes demonstrated by the position of the rays relative to the interhyoideus muscle. In beloniform outgroups, above, the two groups of branchiostegal rays are separated by the interhyoideus. In beloniform fishes, below, only one group of branchiostegal rays is present.
