The flow induced by a jellyfish
Journal of Visualization, 2008The purpose of this study is to understand the propulsion mechanism of a jellyfish during its swimming. We observed the motion of a jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) by a motion-capture camera, and measured the vector field of flow around a jellyfish by using a PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) measurement. A jellyfish is considered to be principally propelled

Jellyfish Model for Ototoxicity
Otology & Neurotology, 2015Pharmacologic ototoxicity is well described in the medical literature, yet efficient screening models are lacking. Aurelia aurita ephyrae, transparent jellyfish with identifiable hair cells, could be an effective model. Structural changes readily manifest behaviorally, and hair cells are easily stained and observed.

Multi-version concurrency control is a widely employed concurrency control mechanism, as it allows non-blocking accesses while providing isolation among transactions. However, maintaining multiple versions increases the latency for both point lookups and ranged retrievals because of the overhead in finding the right version.

The spermatozoon of the jellyfish Nausithoë
Journal of Ultrastructure Research, 1971The spermatozoon of the primitive scyphomedusa Nausithoe has a short conical head, a midpiece containing four large mitochondria, and a long tail consisting of a flagellum. It is therefore a “primitive spermatozoon” as earlier defined. Some unusual structural features have been noted.

Corneal stings from the sea nettle (Chrysaora quinquecirrha) indigenous to the Chesapeake Bay are usually painful but self-limited injuries, with resolution in 24 to 48 hours.Five patients who developed unusually severe and prolonged iritis and intraocular pressure elevation after receiving corneal sea nettle stings were followed for 2 to 4 years ...

Granulomatous jellyfish dermatitis
JDDG: Journal der Deutschen Dermatologischen Gesellschaft, 2007SummaryThe induction of a granulomatous inflammation by jellyfish toxins is rare. More typically, acute toxic and urticarial reactions are seen. An 11‐year‐old boy developed a striated urticarial erythema on the left cheek after contact with a gelatinous mass while swimming in the sea in Croatia.

Preparation of Jellyfish Mucin
A mucin-type glycoprotein extracted from various species of jellyfish (JF) is named qniumucin (Q-mucin). Compared with general mucins, most of which are from mammals including humans, Q-mucin can be collected on a relatively large scale with high yield.Kiminori, Ushida +6 more

Beware the malignant jellyfish
The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2001Small pleural effusions that cannot be assessed by thoracentesis prior to surgery may represent a diagnostic challenge in the patient with a resectable, non-small cell cancer of the lung. Even if the effusion is drained preoperatively and analyzed, the cytology may be falsely negative.
