Bridging the Risk Modeling Gap: Expanding Climate-Related Risk Insurance Through Global Risk Assessment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In 2015, more than 1,000 natural disasters inflicted some $100 billion worth of economic damages around the world. These natural disasters included severe storms, flooding, extreme temperatures, droughts, and wildfires—all of which are expected to ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Notes on Theories with 16 Supercharges [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
We survey the various field theories with 16 real supercharges. The most widely known theory in this class is the N=4 theory in four dimensions. The moduli space of vacua of these theories are described and the physics at the singularities of the moduli ...

A Personalized, 3D Printed Polymeric Device for the Prevention of Post‐Myocardial Infarction Cardiac Remodeling

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Myocardial infarction often leads to pathological remodelling and ventricular dilatation, key features of HFrEF. This study introduces a personalized, 3D‐printed cardiac restraint device (CARD) printed using rationally designed inks displaying the requested printability and mechanical properties.

Why Is the Mechanism Underlying the Chiral‐Induced Selectivity Effect Still Challenging?

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The chiral‐induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect is observed in many experimental configurations and for different materials. However, there are theoretical challenges in attempting to explain those results. A qualitative framework for explaining all the results is presented.

An evaluation of the anti-inflammatory properties of the pregnane X receptor gene isoforms PXR1 and PXR3

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Inflammation, 2019
The pregnane X receptor (PXR) is a nuclear receptor (NR) that primarily activates genes involved in drug metabolism. However, PXR also suppresses inflammation.

3D Printing of Stretchable, Compressible and Conductive Porous Polyurethane for Soft Robotics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A 3D‐printable porous dopamine‐polyurethane acrylate elastomer results in conductive, stretchable, and compressible structures that can be metallized in situ through catechol‐mediated silver reduction. The resulting material function as both compliant soft robot with a and strain sensors without complex assemblies, enabling fully 3D‐printed soft ...
