Topological Point Defects in SmC* Liquid Crystals Under Mechanical Disturbance
Tangetial air jet shear inducess island formation and nucleates topological point defects in uniform SmC films. Island bounded by edge dislocation loops shrink and transform into isolated point defects under continued shear. Mechanical perturbatio provides a controllable route for defect engineering in smectric liquid crystal thin films.

The oil–air lubrication method is specifically employed for high or ultra-high-speed spindle rolling bearings. Under high-speed conditions, the air curtain formed inside the bearing cavity obstructs oil delivery, thereby limiting further increases in ...

Air cavities at the inner cylinder of turbulent Taylor-Couette flow [PDF]
Air cavities, i.e. air layers developed behind cavitators, are seen as a promising drag reducing method in the maritime industry. Here we utilize the Taylor-Couette (TC) geometry, i.e. the flow between two concentric, independently rotating cylinders, to

3D Printed Omniphobic Slippery Liquid Infused Porous Surfaces for Low Surface Tension Repellency
A 3D printing strategy fabricates omniphobic slippery liquid‐infused porous structures with lubricant reservoirs and interconnected microchannels. A post‐printing surface treatment modifies the porous surface to ensure compatibility with the infused fluorinated lubricant.

Lattice Boltzmann method to study the contraction of a viscous ligament
We employ a recently formulated axisymmetric version of the multiphase Shan-Chen (SC) lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) [Srivastava et al, in preparation (2013)] to simulate the contraction of a liquid ligament.

Magnetic Droplet Manipulation on Open Surfaces
Recent advances in the manipulation of magnetic droplets demonstrate various manipulations on open surfaces, including transport, splitting, merging, and force‐controlled motion, enabled by magnetic particles and external fields. ABSTRACT Manipulation of liquids on a smaller scale enables applications in various fields, particularly diagnostics and ...

Utilization of teflon and aluminum oxide for wheel cleaning in Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) grinding [PDF]
Researches concerning cooling-lubrication optimization in grinding have been conducted to contribute to a more sustainable process. An alternative to flood coolant is minimum quantity lubrication (MQL), which spray oil droplets in a compressed air jet ...

Drops with non-circular footprints [PDF]
In this paper we study the morphology of drops formed on partially wetting substrates, whose footprint is not circular. This type of drops is a consequence of the breakup processes occurring in thin films when anisotropic contact line motions take place.
