High Speed Joining by Laser Shock Forming

Advanced Materials Research, 2014
Due to an ongoing trend of function compaction miniaturization gets more and more important in industrial production. This makes hybrid joints under various conditions also in the micro range necessary. Existing joining solutions often have restrictions due to the principle of joining.

Joining by forming of metal–polymer sandwich composite panels

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2018
This article presents new joining-by-forming processes to assemble longitudinally two metal–polymer sandwich composite panels perpendicular to one another. Process design draws from an earlier development of the authors for metal sheets to new concepts based on the combination of sheet-bulk forming with mortise-and-tenon joints.

Joining by forming of polymer-metal sheet-tube connections

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications, 2020
This paper focuses on the mechanical joining of sheets to tubes made from dissimilar materials. The objective is to investigate the applicability of deformation-assisted joining by annular sheet squeezing to hybrid polymer-metal connections in order to understand how this new process can be used as an alternative to conventional fastening and adhesive

Joining of Stepped Shaft and Disc by Forming

Key Engineering Materials, 2016
Joining by forming is an attractive assembly method for mass produced parts due to easiness in execution, no heat effect, various material combinations etc. and industrial applications have been increased in electric and automotive industries. In this paper, a disc plate and stepped shaft is assembled by forming. Assembling is achieved by indenting the

Mechanical Joining by Forming

2006
Abstract Mechanical joining by forming includes all processes where parts being joined are formed locally and sometimes fully. This article focuses on the types, advantages, disadvantages, and applications of the various mechanical joining methods, namely, riveting, crimping, clinching, and self-pierce riveting.

Joining by forming of additive manufactured ‘mortise-and-tenon’ joints

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2017
This article is aimed at extending the ‘mortise-and-tenon’ joining concept commonly utilized in corner or tee joints to lap joints in which one sheet is partially placed over another without any change in their shape. The approach makes use of wire arc additive manufacturing to fabricate the tenons and allows various shapes and thicknesses to be made ...

Processing and tooling considerations in joining by forming technologies; part A—mechanical joining

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2018
Joining by plastic deformation, also called joining by forming techniques, has been developed as a powerful tool for joining a broad range of similar and dissimilar materials in an environmentally friendly manner. Generally, the joining by forming techniques fall into two distinctive categories, namely mechanical joining and solid state welding.

Joining by Forming

2013
By means of punch riveting and clinching, local punctiform joints can be made between two and even multiple thin-walled components. The processes differ from traditional riveting inasmuch as neither require the premiering of the parts to be joined, which is advantageous in terms of both cost and time. Both processes are described in DIN 8593-5 [DIN03m]

Joining of polymer and metal tubes by cold forming

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications, 2015
This paper proposes a technology for joining polymer and metal tubes by their ends at room temperature, which is an alternative to structural bonding and mechanical couplings. The technology is built upon a two-stage tube forming process in which the metal tube is firstly expanded with a mandrel and, subsequently, assembled and locked by compression ...
