Equilibria and Dynamics of a Neural Network Model for Opponent Muscle Control [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
One of the advantages of biological skeleto-motor systems is the opponent muscle design, which in principle makes it possible to achieve facile independent control of joint angle and joint stiffness. Prior analysis of equilibrium states of a biologically-

Probing neutrino oscillations jointly in long and very long baseline experiments

open access: yes, 2001
We examine the prospects of making a joint analysis of neutrino oscillation at two baselines with neutrino superbeams. Assuming narrow band superbeams and a 100 kt water Cerenkov calorimeter, we calculate the event rates and sensitivities to the matter ...

Effects of total knee arthroplasty on ankle alignment in patients with varus gonarthrosis : do we sacrifice ankle to the knee? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Total knee arthroplasty is one of the most commonly preferred surgical methods in the treatment of patients with varus gonarthrosis. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the radiological changes observed in the ankles after total knee arthroplasty ...

Effect of Laser Deoxidation on Adhesive‐Bonded Aluminum in an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser ablation of aluminum under oxygen‐free conditions. The goal is to produce oxide‐free substrates that enable improved adhesive bonding with epoxy. Optimized laser parameters (90% overlap, 300 µJ) combined with oxide‐free substrates result in the highest tensile strength of the adhesive bond.

Primary motor cortex neurons during individuated finger and wrist movements: correlation of spike firing rates with the motion of individual digits versus their principal components

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2014
The joints of the hand provide 24 mechanical degrees of freedom. Yet 2 to 7 principal components (PCs) account for 80 to 95 % of the variance in hand joint motion during tasks that vary from grasping to finger spelling.

Terrain classification for a quadruped robot [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Using data retrieved from the Puppy II robot at the University of Zurich (UZH), we show that machine learning techniques with non-linearities and fading memory are effective for terrain classification, both supervised and unsupervised, even with a ...

Engineered Mycelial Scaffolds With Tunable Ultraviolet Protection, Wettability, Thermal Stability, and Spatial Mechanics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Fungal mycelia grown into biodegradable scaffolds and infused with titania nanoparticles show enhanced ultraviolet shielding, thermal protection, and surface nonwettability. Properties were tuned by drying methods, revealing structure–function relationships.

A method for a categorized and probabilistic analysis of the surface electromyogram in dynamic contractions

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2015
The human motor system permits a wide variety of complex movements. Thereby, the inter- individual variability as well as the biomechanical aspects of the performed movement itself contribute to the challenge of the interpretation of sEMG signals in ...

Non-Parametric Approximations for Anisotropy Estimation in Two-dimensional Differentiable Gaussian Random Fields

open access: yes, 2016
Spatially referenced data often have autocovariance functions with elliptical isolevel contours, a property known as geometric anisotropy. The anisotropy parameters include the tilt of the ellipse (orientation angle) with respect to a reference axis and ...
