A Novel Digitalization Approach for Smart Materials – Ontology‐Based Access to Data and Models

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In order to access heterogeneous material data and model‐based knowledge, the established ontology‐based data access (OBDA) is extended to include material models. This novel ontology‐based data and model access (OBDMA) enables the computation of new responses beyond stored data.

Mean-Field-Type Games in Engineering

open access: yes, 2017
A mean-field-type game is a game in which the instantaneous payoffs and/or the state dynamics functions involve not only the state and the action profile but also the joint distributions of state-action pairs.

Multifunctional Design of Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Structures for Temporary Pediatric Fixation Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A metallic implant's higher stiffness compared to the surrounding bone leads to stress shielding problems, causing bone density reduction and bone growth interference in pediatric patients. 3D‐printed triply periodic minimal surface structures present a promising engineering solution.

Digital Methods for the Fatigue Assessment of Engineering Steels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The use of engineering steels is often limited by their fatigue strength. In the sake of a faster product development, the fatigue behavior can be predicted by machine learning (ML). In this work, ML is applied on a heterogeneous database, covering a wide range of steel types.

Modeling and Accessing Smart Materials with Integrity Constraints in the Shapes Constraint Language and Ontologies—The SmaDi Way

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Integrity constraints enforce consistency and completeness on data. The article discusses a newly developed validator for checking integrity constraints in Shapes Constraint Language (SHACL) through reduction to SPARQL Protocol and RDF Query Language (SPARQL) queries. It can be used with systems for ontology‐based database access.

Solving Transition-Independent Multi-agent MDPs with Sparse Interactions (Extended version) [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
In cooperative multi-agent sequential decision making under uncertainty, agents must coordinate to find an optimal joint policy that maximises joint value. Typical algorithms exploit additive structure in the value function, but in the fully-observable multi-agent MDP setting (MMDP) such structure is not present.

Exchangeable Variable Models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
A sequence of random variables is exchangeable if its joint distribution is invariant under variable permutations. We introduce exchangeable variable models (EVMs) as a novel class of probabilistic models whose basic building blocks are partially ...

Every Angle Is Worth A Second Glance: Mining Kinematic Skeletal Structures from Multi-view Joint Cloud [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Multi-person motion capture over sparse angular observations is a challenging problem under interference from both self- and mutual-occlusions. Existing works produce accurate 2D joint detection, however, when these are triangulated and lifted into 3D, available solutions all struggle in selecting the most accurate candidates and associating them to ...
