Following some examples of the differences in personal and judicial definitions of joint custody, a classification of custody is offered.

The Journal of Psychiatry & Law, 1983The public records of 500 divorces involving minor children were abstracted from the files of a county probate and family court. The families’ demographics and the chronology of the marriages and their dissolution are reported, as are the varieties and frequencies of the custody and visitation decisions.

American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, 1979This survey of 40 middle-class divorced fathers, focusing on father's perceptions of their relationship with their children, suggests that those with joint custody are more likely than those with visitation rights to continue to have a high degree of involvement in and influence on their children's growth and development.
