Functional alignment is a feasible alignment strategy in robotic assisted total knee arthroplasty for knee osteoarthritis with extra-articular deformity – A case series

open access: yesSICOT-J
Introduction: Extraarticular deformity (EAD) with knee arthritis is a complex condition involving tri-planar bone deformity with pathological malalignment and chronic soft tissue contracture or laxity in the knee joint.

Potential anatomic risk factors resulting oversized postoperative medial proximal tibial angle after double level osteotomy

open access: yesBMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 2022
Background Double level osteotomy (DLO) has been introduced to prevent increased postoperative joint line obliquity. However, although DLO is planned, knees with postoperative medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) > 95° in preoperative surgical planning ...

Hip-Spine Syndrome: The Coronal Alignment of the Lumbar Spine and Pelvis in Patients with Ankylosed Hips

open access: yesSpine Surgery and Related Research, 2020
Introduction: Fixed abduction and/or adduction deformities of the hip joint may cause pelvic obliquity with subsequent development of secondary lumbar scoliosis.

Radiographic features of knee osteoarthritis in the lateral view depending on joint line obliquity

open access: yesORTHOPAEDICS TRAUMATOLOGY and PROSTHETICS
Objective. To evaluate the radiographic features of sagittal knee joint morphology in osteoarthritis, taking into account the joint line obliquity determined using an original method (mJLO). Methods. 62 lateral knee radiographs of 45 patients with medial knee osteoarthritis were analyzed.

Preservation of joint line obliquity is not a critical factor for improving patient satisfaction

open access: yes
Abstract Purpose: This study has aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes in paired bilateral posterior stabilized (PS) TKAs with significantly different degrees of joint line obliquity (JLO) change. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on 128 patients who ...

Distribution of phenotypes of coronal plane alignment of the knees and functional phenotypes in the healthy young Iranian population: A cross‐sectional study

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Orthopaedics
Purpose The functional phenotypes and the coronal plane alignment knee (CPAK) classification have recently been introduced. This study aimed to describe the phenotypes of normal knees in the healthy young Iranian population based on these systems ...

Coronal plane changes in fixed‐ versus mobile‐bearing unicompartmental knee replacements: Clinical and revision outcomes

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Orthopaedics
Purpose To investigate the relationship between coronal plane changes after mobile‐ and fixed‐bearing (MB and FB) unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR) and clinical outcomes while also comparing revision rates and joint awareness between the two ...

Ankles intermalleolar distance influences knee and ankle joint line obliquity independent of arthrosis presence or severity

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy
Abstract Purpose Lower extremity coronal alignment parameters include varus, neutral, and valgus alignment as well as knee and ankle joint line obliquity (KJLO and AJLO). KJLO and AJLO are influenced by the intermalleolar distance during long‐leg standing radiographs (LSRs).

Proximal tibiofibular joint dislocation is rare in knee dislocations type Schenck III or higher

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Orthopaedics
Purpose The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of proximal tibiofibular joint (PTFJ) dislocations in knee dislocations classified as Schenck type ≥III and to compare with uninjured contralateral knees, which served as control cohort ...

Joint line obliquity after high tibial osteotomy: assessment and clinical implications

open access: yes
A valgus-producing high tibial osteotomy effectively addresses symptoms caused by medial knee osteoarthritis with varus malalignment, but increases knee joint line obliquity in the frontal plane. Surgeons face challenges in deciding whether to incorporate predicted joint line obliquity change into high tibial osteotomy planning.
