The one-dimensional KPZ equation and its universality class

open access: yes, 2015
Our understanding of the one-dimensional KPZ equation, \textit{alias} noisy Burgers equation, has advanced substantially over the past five years. We provide a non-technical review, where we limit ourselves to the stochastic PDE and lattice type models ...

Meta‐Rod Mechanical Metamaterials With Programmable Reconfiguration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Existing mechanical metamaterials achieve programmable large deformations in planar square or cubic configurations, restricted by required complex boundary conditions. This research proposes a 1D metamaterial, Meta‐rod, with linear, bending, twisting, area, and volume deformation modes.

Nanothermometry in Living Cells: Physical Limits, Conceptual and Material Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Heat and temperature are fundamental to life. When nanothermometers began probing regions as small as a living cell, they triggered controversial claims of large intracellular temperature gradients. We review physical constraints energy‐conservation, entropy production, thermodynamic fluctuations, and molecular dynamics.

The Cuttlebone Blueprint for Multifunctional Metamaterials: Design Taxonomy, Functional Decoupling, and Future Horizons

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cuttlebone‐inspired metamaterials exploit a septum‐wall architecture to achieve excellent mechanical and functional properties. This review classifies existing designs into direct biomimetic, honeycomb‐type, and strut‐type architectures, summarizes governing design principles, and presents a decoupled design framework for interpreting multiphysical ...

Fabrication of Pyridinic Nitrogen‐Functionalized Carbon Cloth for High‐Performance Iron‐Chromium Flow Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The carbon cloth electrode with targeted pyridinic nitrogen doping, achieved via urea pyrolysis, effectively modulates the adsorption of Cr(II) species and enhances electron transfer, leading to significantly improved kinetics of the Cr(II)/Cr(III) reaction. The material demonstrates a high discharge capacity of 689.3 mAh and an energy efficiency of 72.

Radial and angular-momentum Regge trajectories: a systematic approach

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2012
We present the analysis of Ref. [1] of the radial (n) and angular-momentum (J) Regge trajectories for all light-quark meson states listed in the Particle Data Tables.

Hunter-gatherers in a howling wilderness: Neoliberal capitalism as a language that speaks itself [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The 'self-referential' character of evolutionary process noted by Goldenfeld and Woese (2010) can be restated in the context of a generalized Darwinian theory applied to economic process through a 'language' model: The underlying ...

Photon Avalanching Nanoparticles: The Next Generation of Upconverting Nanomaterials?

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This Perspective outlines the mechanistic foundations that enable photon‐avalanche (PA) behavior in lanthanide nanomaterials and contrasts them with emerging application spaces and forward‐looking design strategies. By bridging threshold engineering, energy‐transfer dynamics, and materials engineering, we provide a coherent roadmap for advancing the ...

EL AGUA COMO ELEMENTO DE REFLEXIÓN ÉTICO-POLÍTICA EN EL NUEVO PARADIGMA DE LA GOBERNABILIDAD MIGRATORIA / WATER AS AN ELEMENT OF ETHICAL-POLITICAL REFLECTION IN THE NEW PARADIGM OF MIGRATORY GOVERNANCE

open access: yesBarataria, 2017
Global governance is in a crisis situation as a result of the global and multi-relational world in which we find ourselves, which, while contributing to joint actions for improvement, also creates greater situations of inequality and discrimination. That
