The synthetic rock mass approach for jointed rock mass modelling
International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences, 2011Abstract This paper describes synthetic rock mass (SRM) modeling, a new approach for simulating the mechanical behavior of jointed rock mass. This technique uses the bonded particle model for rock to represent intact material and the smooth-joint contact model (SJM) to represent the in situ joint network.

Permeability predictions for jointed rock masses
International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1995Abstract The following problems have been studied: the precolation threshold of jointed rock masses, the Representative Elementary Volume, the permeability of rock masses with impersistent rock joints and the permeability variation with depth. The proposed simple methods are verified against the results of numerical computation and the Stripa Project,

Component characteristics of jointed rock masses
International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1975Abstract In order to use continuum elastic theory for analyzing a multi phase material, such as a jointed rock, certain assumptions are made. These assumptions are necessary so that the component characteristics or moduli can be combined to give the mass characteristics or moduli.

Anisotropy in jointed rock mass breakage
Mining Science and Technology, 1989Abstract Cracks in a rock material are generally closed and have no volume effect on the rock material's deformational characteristics. These closed cracks, however, markedly effect the rock materials strength. Joints, on the other hand, do have a volume effect on the rock mass's deformational behaviour as well as its strength or stability.

Deformation of a jointed rock mass
Geologiska Föreningen i Stockholm Förhandlingar, 1978Abstract The finite-element method and the discrete-block method have been used to study the defor-mational behaviour of a jointed rock mass subjected to simple shear displacement. Blocks in models with large sizes of block make contact at few points which cause large openings of joints and high stress concentrations in the blocks and surrounding ...

Comparison of failure criteria for jointed rock masses
International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences, 2004This paper compares two different failure strength criteria for rock; the popular non-linear Hoek and Brown failure criterion and a simple non-linear failure criterion recently proposed by Ramamurthy. Equivalent continuum analyses of jointed rock masses have been carried out using program FLAC with each selected failure criterion.

A constitutive model for jointed rock masses
Journal of the Chinese Institute of Engineers, 1988Abstract The presence of discontinuity in the geological media has long been recognized as an important factor influencing the mechanical behavior of the media. This paper proposed a versatile constitutive law that can model an assemblage of intact rock blocks separated by cleavage, bedding planes, joints, or other types of structural weak planes.

Rock Bolts and Shear Stiffness in Jointed Rock Masses
Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1989Both deformational response and stress distribution in an anisotropic rock mass are examined. Joint imposed rock mass anisotropy is considered in relation to joint and rock material shear stiffness. Two typical rock mass deformational characteristics are investigated by considering component moduli representing a firm and then soft rock mass.
