Influence of degree of interlock on confined strength of jointed hard rock masses
The strength of jointed rock mass is strongly controlled by the degree of interlock between its constituent rock blocks. The degree of interlock constrains the kinematic freedom of individual rock blocks to rotate and slide along the block forming joints.

Detection of nanoseismic events related to slope instabilities in the quarry district of Coreno Ausonio (Italy) [PDF]
Le cave per l’estrazione di materiale roccioso rappresentano contesti in cui possono aver luogo eventi di instabilità gravitativa causati dalle continue sollecitazioni cui sono soggette le pareti produttive, principalmente connesse alle vibrazioni dovute

Rock Mass Classification for Columnar Jointed Basalt: A Case Study of Baihetan Hydropower Station
Rock mass classification is important in preliminary design of geotechnical engineering projects. Using the columnar jointed basalt at the foundation of Baihetan Hydropower Station as an example, this paper presents a classification scheme of the ...

Prediction of strength and deformability of an interlocked blocky rock mass using UDEC [PDF]
The accurate prediction of strength and deformability characteristics of a rock mass is very challenging. In practice, properties of a rock mass are often estimated from available empirical relationships based on the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS ...

Forecast Jointed Rock Mass Compressive Strength Using a Numerical Model
The method of forecasting the strength of the jointed rock mass by numerical modeling of finite element method in ABAQUS was described. The paper presents advantages of this method to solve the problem of determining the mechanical characteristics of ...

Strength of massive to moderately jointed hard rock masses
The Hoek-Brown (HB) failure criterion and the geological strength index (GSI) were developed for the estimation of rock mass strength in jointed and blocky ground where rock mass failure is dominated by sliding along open joints and rotation of rock ...

Strength of jointed rock masses [PDF]
Jointed rock masses comprise interlocking angular par- ticles or blocks of hard brittle material separated by discontinuity surfaces which may or may not be coated with weaker materials. The strength of such rock masses depends on the strength of the intact pieces and on their freedom of movement which, in turn, depends on the number, orientation ...

Energy damage evolution mechanism of non-across jointed rock mass under uniaxial compression
Energy accumulation and energy release appear evidently during the whole deformation process of jointed rock mass. In order to explore the energy evolution law of jointed rock mass under loading condition, the uniaxial compression experiment and the ...
